I agree he's not worth 10th OA. He's also not worth a 2nd. He's worth a pick in the late teens. Trying to simultaneously go young on the blueline and not having goaltending is why I would fire Fitz if I was the owner. That's not a mistake an NHL GM should make.
50% retained sure a pick in the late teens.

What should Tom Fitzgerald have done differently?

Going into the year the dcore was set up as:

Siegs-Hamilton
Hughes-Marino
Bahl-Miller
Smith

Nemec was kept in the AHL to preserve veterans.

Should he have kept Severson or Graves on the contracts they got? Do either of those contracts seem like something people want now? Who would you have moved to fit those guys under the salary cap?

Unfortunately Miller got hurt to start the year, as did Hamilton, Siegs, Marino, and Smith battling injuries throughout.

the kids were the only ones to stay Healthy, and were the best dmen on the team when they played.

He then consistently looked to improve goaltending, while understanding that there is a long term window, and not overpaying to go in on a team riddled by injury.

Again, some truth and some falsehood. Ullmark has never played 50 games in the league. Who is playing the other 35 games with him? His goals saved above expected is almost identical to Markstrom. Saros goals saved above expected is lower than Markstrom. He's also used to very low shot totals. Is that how NJ plays?

I'm genuinely puzzled by the lower thought process tier fans in NJ reaction to Markstrom. He's been top 10 in the league for 5 of the last 6 seasons in goals saved above expected. This is the key metric for any goalie. Playing in Boston as an example is very easy. Playing in NJ not so much.
What source are you using for GSAx?

Evolving hockey has markstrom with 2/6 years in the top 10.

MoneyPuck has him 1/6 (9th this year)

The same one the NHL teams use. In goal magazine. Kevin Woodley's stuff. Moneypuck is the worst advanced stat site there is. You and I and all but the worst posters here could do a better job. Evolving hockey is okish, but it's a player based model not a goalie based model. Goaltening is the position NHL teams all use specialists for because generalist get it wrong most of the time.

Ingoalmag.com it's 50 bucks a year just FYI.
Interesting.

If you know, what in general is different about their methodology?

Emphasis on different stuff for example like pre shot passes? Screens? Accounting for shooter quality? Just better overall tracking data than the public models have?

Biggest thing other models don't account for is screens and tips. I've always felt I had a good handle on skaters as I played competitive hockey for a long time. I just never understood the nuances of goalie evaluation. For example Sharangovich really struggled defensively this year. But it was mostly because he played a lot with Huberdeau. I didn't have that level of goalie understanding. If you want to learn about goaltending KW is the man.

Cory Schneider in his mid 20s and being considered a good top end goalie for the future went for 9th overall. He wasn't a 34 year old goalie on the backend of his career going for a 10th overall pick. If NJ acquires Markstrom the price better be less than 10th overall otherwise the GM needs to be fired.

10OA is too much even in this draft. The 2nd that's been proposed is too little. I wouldn't trade him for less value than a pick in the late teens. If the price is less than that I think we should keep him and trade him at the 2026 deadline. We can get more than a 2nd then and have him for a year and a half.

We need a stout, physical RHD more than anything else.

Andersson would be fine-ish......but his puck moving skills are more than redundant in our top 6 (Power, Dahlin, Byram, maybe Johnson....).

Before we got Byram, I would have jumped all over #11+ for Andersson.

Now? Ehhhh, might rather have Roy for nothing but cash.

You won't get a mid teens pick for a goalie that is 34 already. Maybe if he was 26.

If he doesn’t tank in his mid 30s or get injured. You get what you can now.

Here’s a fun one:

Given the amount of youth on both New Jersey and Buffalo, they may consider moving their 10th and 11th overall picks.

How about this:

Markstrom to Nj for the 10th overall pick

And

Rasmus Andersson to Buffalo for the 11th overall pick.

What do you guys think?
Markstrom isn't worth anywhere near that much. He might fetch a 3rd.

I don't know why the Flames would trade Andersson unless he demands a trade. He's still got two years left on his deal, so I think it's more likely they deal him next season. It's not like they have a bunch of up-and-coming defencemen.
