From Draft Years 2007-2011 Rank The Top 10 Defensive Defensemen Overall

From the players drafted 2007-2011 (this year) rank who you feel will be the best defensive defenseman. Not who will be the best defensemen, but who has the best ability to be a great shutdown guy.

I am really curious where people rank Luke Schenn, Adam Larsson (if he gets in there), Victor Hedman, Dylan McIlrath ect...

Really curious where most people rank these guys, who they have on top of the list, and if anyone from this year can make it, and see where everyone stacks up.

Isn't Rundblad basically the complete opposite of a shutdown D?

Well, he's got Erik Karlsson third so he either needs to read the topic again or re-take that "Definitions of the defensive defenseman" course he took this summer. ;)

As far as the type of guys who really only contribute defensively, I like these ten, not necessarily in this order:

Kevin Marshall (PHI '07)
Keaton Ellerby (FLA '07)
Karl Alzner (WAS '07)
Cody Goloubef (CBJ '08)
Yann Sauve (VAN '08)
Matt Clark (ANA '09)
William Wrenn (SJS '09)
Alex Urbom (NJD '09)
Radko Gudas (TBL '10)
Jarred Tinordi (MTL '10)

I didn't think these guys would be considered shutdown, am I under rating their defensive abilities?

Not counting Cowen or Aulie?

Cowen's got a pretty decent offensive game. Not how sure it will translate but he's hardly a one-trick pony.

Aulie could go on that list, too. Like I said, it wasn't a ranking, just a compilation of 10.

1. Victor Hedman ( 2-way again but the fact that he's so tall and already hard to play against is gonna make him one of the best defensive players)
2. Karl Alzner (2-way play again but he's the most defensive one on the pairing with Carlson)
3. Ryan Mcdonagh (2-way play but still in NCAA he had the most defensive tasks)
4. Tyler Myers (More offensive but he's so tall that he's gonna be put in every defensive situation)
5. Luke Schenn
6. Dylan McIlrath
7. Tim Erixon
8 Jared Tinordi
9. Colten Teubert
10. Keaton Ellerby

These guys will be known more for their defense than their offense in the future, even myers

It could easily be argued that Pietrangelo should be near the top of the list. His defensive play is severely misjudged by many.

Not that everyone has to share that opinion.
