I can’t tell you how depressed it makes me feel that we are about 4 weeks of what should’ve been the NHL draft and well underway the Leafs off-season and all the RUMOURS, and instead we are looking at a dumb 24 team playoff and the off-season won’t be until August or September

The lead up to the draft/free agency is one of my favourite times in hockey

Any thoughts on this years Aug 15 NCAA class?

Only guy I can see that we have a need for and who is good (there are a few undersized W's who are below PPG (Carson Meyer, Karcg Bachman, Chris Wilkie), and a few LHD who are good like Ryan Shea)

My target: Cam Morrison is a guy I'd like the Leafs to bring in.
Strong 2 way player, 6'3 C/LW.
Not the best NCAA #'s, 27 points in 37 games, but played on the PK and relied on heavily in the defensive zone. I saw him play a few times, and think hes an ideal bottom 6 guy for us if he develops properly. Has the size, needs to add some adult strength.

Thoughts on Luke Martin? Pretty sure he was a 2nd rounder by Carolina actually. Numbers look to have stagnated but I don't mind his offensive tools from what i've seen, especially when you consider the competition he faces logging big minutes. Seems to move well and handle the puck at a competent level.

Strickland reported that he's not signing with Carolina so he's more likely to be available than, say, a guy like Stotts.

Oops. Oh well, no big deal. Pure defensive guy. Production is not going to be much, but I like his upside as a shutdown defensive guy. He had comparisons to Dumoulin when he was a prospect, and I think that is a fair comparison. What separates him more than most of those AHL contract guys is that I think if we offered him an ELC, he does not need a lot of development to make an immediate impact on the Marlies. He's not NHL ready, but I think within a year, he could definitely challenge for an NHL job and would be ahead of at least Duszak and Hollowell on the RD depth chart. I think he could step into a legit AHL role on day one and contribute. The rest would likely need to be in a Marlies rotation or even start on the Growlers before turning into anything, so I would not give them an ELC on day one. Ryan Shea is more of an offensive LD. I like him too, but I think other teams will offer him a better spot on a depth chart than the Leafs would. Between Sandin, Kral and Rubins, as well as Hoefenmayer, we have done a pretty good job with adding younger guys to the LD.

Stotts is our guy so he is definitely available to us. At this point, however, I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded for a mid-round pick. I don't think it really makes sense to let a guy like him go for nothing when he's developed pretty much as well as you could hope, and has shown consistent improvement and a more well-rounded skill set than a guy like McGregor. Even McGregor was borderline worth an ELC last year, but he was sunk due to his limited upside (pretty much a defensive 4C with 20-25 point scoring ability), only having one good season, and a poor AHL audition. Stotts did not have any AHL addition, but was much better than McGregor in the other two areas while still providing plus defensive ability and versatility (can play LW in addition to center). Some team would probably give him an ELC, as being a year younger and having a more well-rounded skill set than most of the others gives him a major edge.

I wonder how many more AHL deals we see to fill the Growlers roster, although it would be highly dependent on the turnover of the current roster.

I think they could use a goalie for sure. Bouthillier getting signed doesn't seem likely, Zhukov was bad, and Gahagen might honestly be able to find a clearer AHL opportunity after the year he just had. That leaves only Ian Scott.

Morris, Lethemon, and Farkas seem pretty intriguing

Chaotic to say the least.

Shortened time to make decisions, talk to teams about trades, and negotiate contracts.

We could see some really bad, short-sight, and not well thought out plans.
So not much has changed

I almost want you to start its own thread, and track who is signed where and when.
Just to see how many of the 'top' young UFA's are going where.

Id assume most go to the currently good teams who lack depth at a particular position, or bad teams where they could get into the NHL top 6/4 faster but who knows. Could be an interesting experiment.

Easy enough for @SeaOfBlue to track these on a spreadsheet, and just post updates from time to time.

Well I am sure at this point teams are more focused on getting the playoffs figured out. Outside of the guys whose rights expire in a week, there really is no rush. Especially with the guys worth ELC's. All of the ones on my list are owned by another team until August 15th (and Riley Stotts), since many of the non-senior UDFA NCAA guys are returning for at least one more year.

The Marlies are going to sign a few more for depth and for the Growlers, but it could mostly just be guys they re-sign (i.e. Woods, Estephan, Wilson, etc.). The rest of the guys are your run of the mill for the most part.

Timashov is apparently heading to Riga next year. I'm surprised he is not giving it a few more years, especially with the lack of depth in the Detroit organization.

Fun fact - Timashov still leads Leafs' forwards in hits this year despite only playing 39 for them, averaging only 8 minutes a game and being the size of a miniature poodle. Moore has the fourth most hits among Leafs' forwards despite only playing 27 games and being even smaller.

How could this be possible when many people said the Leafs were gonna regret losing him?????
Esp since he is supposed to become the 2nd coming of Martin St Louis by main board the moment Wings picked him up. How he is going to haunt the Leafs for years to come.....
