for those of us of a certain age-when we think of all the bashing that people give Bettman--were would love to see how those people would react to how Zieglar ran things. Many consider him to be one of the most corrupt bosses of any pro league.

Many people suspect he knew about Alan Eagelson but did nothing about or used it against him and not many former players had nice things to say about him and his over involvement in the pension plan and some called it out and out misuse and abuse

Yes, Ziegler is the source of a lot of problems people have with the league today. His relationship with Eagleson stagnated labour progress, leading to the lockouts and current problems that has. He was reluctant to pursue a TV deal, and we all see how that is. He even is the one behind modern expansion, and allowed troubled groups in (an unknown Japanese group, possibly the Yakuza, in Tampa; Firestone in Ottawa, who built the arena out of town), and ignored Hamilton's application, simply because those groups would pay upfront.

Though he does deserve credit for modernizing the league after Clarence Campbell retired, as that was desperately needed. But Ziegler really set back the league when it was at one of its peaks, the 1980s.

He's as active in his role today as he was during his tenure as president.

    fun useless fact

when he took over the NHL--the NHL was more popular then the NBA--in the 80's the NBA changed with the times and the NHL became very stagnant

Funny one of the main guys behind that left the NBA shortly after Ziegler was forced out. He would have had some ideas on what to do, if maybe he joined the NHL.

Wang was somewhat useful to society when he saved the Islanders. Zeigler could have not existed and life would remain the same, if not better.

    without side tracking the discussion

Bettman was at add with many of the "old" school owners for the longest time--so it was more then mentality of the owners then Bettman--it want till a new bread of owners joined the NHL that the old school started to change the way they think
