Ron Hextall was their last decent goalie I would say...
Vanbiesbrouck
Cechmanek
Esche / Niittymaki
Biron
Boucher / Emery / Leighton
Bobrovsky
Bryzgalov
Mason
Elliott
The Flyers problem hasn't been that they
never have decent goaltending. The problem is they haven't been able to get it from one goalie for a sustained period of time.
2000 - Brian Boucher was fantastic leading them to Game 7 of ECF against NJ.
2001 - Roman Cechmanek was fantastic, finishing 2nd in Vezina voting behind Dominik Hasek and 4th in Hart voting.
2004 - Robert Esche was fantastic leading them to Game 7 of ECF against Tampa Bay.
2008 - Martin Biron was fantastic, leading them to Game 5 of the ECF against Pittsburgh.
2014 - 2016 - Steve Mason finally solidified the goaltending for multiple seasons but had a falling out with management/coaching combined with nagging injuries and left as a UFA.
They have gotten quality goaltending, but they desperately need a franchise goalie to lock down the position for a good 5-10 years. They had a shot to have it with Bobrovsky but dropped the ball. Laviolette badly managed the goalies in the 2011 Playoffs and Ed Snider forced Paul Holmgren to throw a massive deal at who they thought was the best available goalie. Unfortunately that happened to be Ilya Bryzgalov. This led to Bobrovsky asking to be traded.
We are hopeful that Carter Hart can be that guy for us.
