Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6-5, 196-lb pound defenseman Philippe Myers to an entry-level contract, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

Myers, 18 (01/25/97), was attending Flyers Training Camp on an amateur try-out after spending two seasons with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He has appeared in two games so far this season with the Huskies, going scoreless. Last season, he posted eight points (2g-6a) and 55 penalty minutes in 60 regular season and added two assists and 15 penalty minutes in six QMJHL playoff games.

I guess it doesn't hurt to take a flier on someone with those raw physical attributes so long as we're not crunched on our # of contracts.

I know he's only 18, so he hasn't put on a whole lot of muscle yet, but 196 still feels a bit light to me for someone 6'5. The eliteprospects link has him at 209 though, so I wonder what the discrepancy is.

Maybe lazy reporting by whoever was writing the article for the flyers article? 196 just so happens to be the metric cm equivalent of 6'5.

All that aside, another D-man prospect doesn't hurt. I look forward to reading how he progresses.

A January birthday so he won't be able to play in the AHL until 17-18. So he could be a replacement for the likes of Alt, Morin and Marti.

Never trust the Official press releases. A lot of the time they have out of date info.

He could be a guy that even plays a season as an overager. He still has two season left to figure that out however.

They had some guy's birthday wrong on a rookie camp press release. I think it was the other guy there on an ATO, Luke Philip.

Adding a 6'5 RHD for free is always a good thing. Who knows if he will ever be worth anything but at least Hextall and Co are out there looking for diamonds in the rough.

It looks like that's what Maxim Lamarche did. Hopefully Myers turns out to be more deserving of his ELC than he was.

Lamarche was signed after his overage season- a little different scenario. If Myers were to play his overage season, that would burn off the first year of his ELC. But that decision doesn't have to be made for 2 years. A lot can happen. I just brought it up because he's most likely going to be a long-term project that will come along slowly.

Also helps him that they didn't draft a defenseman outside of Provorov (Hextall made it sound like they were trying to).

If we are talking about 1st year undrafted players signed by the Flyers, Tyler Hostetter was the recent one that got signed but obviously didnt work out.

You beat me to it. I came on here to post that same thing.

I'm a bit more optimistic on this guy for 2 reasons: 1) this was a very deep draft and even Button said that there were guys not taken this year that will be next year (so perhaps Hexy was worried he would be nabbed up) and 2) I HOPE we are better at both scouting and developing now.

This is where the Parks contract makes sense, so that we can sign guys like this to ELCs.

Hockey DB has him listed at 205lbs for what its worth

Myers' contract will slide so this doesn't really have any impact on Parks' contract.
