If he's great at camp they will make room for him by moving or waiving a guy like Read, or even Weise.

But I expect him to start in the AHL.

MV is another example of Hextall's strategy.
He's probably going to go into the season with 14 forwards on the roster, and have Leier (if he makes it through waivers), Vorobyov, AK and MV in the AHL.

That provides viable options (along with veterans like Colin McDonald) in case of a bad string of injuries, but also the ability to trade one of his bottom 5 wingers (Laughton, Read, Weise, Raffl, Lehtera) if the right offer came along.

Given his performance in a top college program, the fact that MV, who is older than most 1st year AHL players, probably won't crack the NHL roster, raises questions about the level of competition presented in college.

If a guy who scores more than a PPG isn't NHL ready, is college above junior but only about the level of the Swiss league?

NLA is easily better than college...

Equal to the Swiss League.

The ECAC isn't a great league. It is pretty clearly behind NCHC, Hockey East, and the Big Ten.

It also helps to be 24 playing against younger kids.

College isn't one league, it's a collection of leagues and some are stronger than others and every league has doormats. It would be a much higher level if you just had the top 20 college teams play each other, but the NCAA doesn't work like that.

It think it's fair to say that college hockey has less talent than the CHL but it's a more pro-style game and against older/bigger guys, right? So the competition isn't as good, but it's probably an easier jump from college to NHL than from the CHL.

College players generally have less raw talent but are older, more mature and closer to their peak. It's kind of like in the CHL the overagers are the best players in their leagues (for the most part) outside of the elite NHL prospects. There's an experience advantage too.

The college game is faster. There is less space to work with and it is harder to score. As pointed out above though, the ECAC lags far behind the best conferences in college hockey.

ECAC was weak 15 years ago. Very strong now. Atlantic Hockey Conference lags others at this time.
