What is wrong with Flyers' penalty killing? It's getting worse from season to season, now it's 74.8% and Flyers are 29th in the league, this is a disaster. Thanks god Philadelphia doesn't take too many penalties. Who is a PK specialist in the Flyers' coaching staff?

Well, for one thing, featuring Lehtera and Filppula as the forwards on your second unit is a recipe for disaster. Those guys lack to quickness to close down passing/shooting lanes at even strength, let alone with one less guy on the ice. Hextall and Hakstol seem hellbent on developing Laughton into this defensively responsible fourth liner, but refuse to give him an extended look in a PK role.

The combination of Hagg, MacDonald, and Manning get this reputation of being defensively responsible, but they're all routinely behind the play and late in getting sticks tied up, shooting/passing lanes blocked up, etc. You can't just rely on your goaltender to be your best pk'er. Again, it comes down to a lack of foot speed/quickness and also a lack of hockey sense to make up for it.

MacDonald & Hagg have been letting guys get free reign around the net lately.

It’s not the worlds greatest personnel group when they’re not willingly using bums but it’s not one of the worst in the league bad either. The PK trending down every season doesn’t really speak well for Lappy either. I don’t see how you can logically bring him back next year if the PK finishes as bad as it is right now.

I'm not giving Lappy a pass. Most successful PK's close lanes quickly, and they don't need to run all over the ice to do it. Lappy's not getting these guys in sync well enough.

Contrast our PK with Washington's on Sunday, which was a thing of beauty. The Caps were collapsing on the Flyers players and covering for one another without a second's hesitation.

The problem with the PK is a microcosm of what's wrong with the coaching staff as a whole. The roster definitely has holes, but they're not evening picking the best options with the personnel they have. Similar to Konecny not being on the PP over Flip and Lehtera, Laughton buried down the lineup, Elliot getting way too many starts, etc. Personnel holes don't forgive making the worst of what you do have.

It's everything.

GA/60
Leier 14.4
Filppula 10.5 (10.2 last season)
Couts 9.5 (7.0)
Laughton 8.8
Giroux 7.5
Simmonds 6.7 (5.8)
Raffl 4.4

Manning 12.1 (5.1 last season)
Provorov 10.7 (7.5)
Hagg 9.2
MacDonald 8.6 (9.0)
Gudas 8.1 (6.6)

And they miss VdV: GA 5.0, 6.3, 6.5 - when you do it for 3 years, probably not a fluke

Assuming nothing changes for the rest of the season/playoffs. I can't see Lappy remaining as our PK coach. 74% is abysmal.

Over the past 30 years (since 87-88), there have been 826 team seasons since then. The Edmonton Oilers are currently tied for the worst PK% of the last 30 years at 72.7, tied with the 88-89 Leafs. Flyers and Senators, this season, are currently tied for the 812th and 811th spot (lowest) PK% of the last 30 years, respectfully. That is f***ing awful and a testament to how f***ing awful Lappy is and the player management of the PK really is.

Someone should be bringing this to Hextall on a constant basis. Asking him what is he going to do about it?
