FLYER PLAYER PROFILE – MARKOV

Andrei Markov appears to be one player who benefited from a lost season of hockey. Markov spent the 2004-05 season playing for the Moscow Dynamo where he racked up good offensive numbers and was a plus 27 in 42 games. Markov’s strong play carried over to the “New NHL†as he’s been playing at an All-Star level for Montreal this season.

Markov, originally a 6th round pick in 1998, will turn 27 this month (December) and is on pace for a career year offensively. More importantly for the Canadians Markov has played a great defensive game and has logged close to 25 minutes a game while continuously facing the opposition’s top line every night.

The 6 foot 210 defenseman plays exceptional positional defense and has finally found consistency in his game that has prohibited him in the past to reach the next level in NHL. Markov’s consistency has been a big help to the relative young Hab’s team, whom currently find themselves in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Blessed with a canon shot, crisp passing and an uncanny ability to join the rush, Markov can still improve his offensive statistics. However, the Canadians lack strong offensive players at the forward positions, which will limit Markov’s productivity. As an example, the Ottawa Senators have scored 41 more goals than the Canadians after 30 odd games. Montreal fans feel that Markov’s numbers will improve in the second half of the season as players like Perezhogin, Higgins and Ryder continue to improve and score on more of their opportunities.

Montreal Canadian fans can only hope that Markov’s consistent two way play continues, as they will need a continued performance in the second half of the season if the Habs are to reach the playoffs and perhaps create a stir in the tournament.
