Last year ended in disappointment for our club as we missed the playoffs on the last day of the regular season, after being in first place in the conference at the 1/4 mark of the year. The new players we acquired down the stretch to hold on to the playoff spot didn't work out for us and we decided it was time for some change.

The first trade was made with the Philadelphia Flyers which saw Cam Barker and prospect Matt Clark traded for big physical defense man Douglas Murray and a 4th round pick in the 2011 draft. Murray could be paired with Matt Greene this year to form a big pair of shutdown guys for the Hurricanes.

The second trade seen the RFA rights to Brian Elliott shipped to San Jose for prospect Benn Ferriero and winger Jeff Tambellini. Tambellini is expect to play a bottom six role with the Canes, he brings some speed and skill to the bottom six. Ferriero is a guy that the Hurricanes may sign to an entry level contract this offseason and he to could be playing in a bottom six role. A scorer in college and at the AHL level Ferriero is a guy that down the road could also fill in on the 2nd line for short periods of time.

One of the guys that the Hurricanes traded for and let them down Raffi Torres was then sent packing to Dallas for two draft picks a 5th in 2011 and a 6th in 2012. "We just didn't get what we expected from Raffi. At the end of season player meetings we talked with Raffi and both sides decided it was better to move on" said GM Lemoine.

Eric Fehr was signed to an offer sheet last summer by the Edmonton Oilers, and the Hurricanes matched it. During the year the Oilers expressed interest in Fehr and the two sides could never come to an agreement. Fast forward to the offseason and the deal is done, Fehr finally goes to Edmonton. In return the Hurricanes receive 4th and 6th round picks in the 2011 entry draft.

The biggest trade for the club in terms of impact was made late last night with Montreal. The Hurricanes shipped prospect Danny Kristo to Montreal after a disappointing year in the NCAA, which seen Kristo suffer a frost bite injury to his foot. Nobody really knows how the injury happened except for Kristo. In return the Hurricanes acquired Andrei Kostitsyn, a player that the club had previously thought they acquired only to have the trade denied by the league because of rules regarding players signed to offer sheets. Kostitsyn is a young pending RFA that will be signed in the coming days. Expect to see Andrei playing on one of the top two lines either with Anze Kopitar or Derek Roy as his center.
