This is an update of an old post from a couple of years ago.

I have tried to track down the first appearance in the league by players born in a certain country, or just having an ethnic heritage from that country. Primary focus has been on NHL players.

From the more exotic countries I’ve included some that appeared in North American pro leagues or major junior leagues.

There are many with roots in Ukraine, Croatia, Russia, Germany, England etc, etc. As much as I appreciate input on the subject, it's not necessary to mention names unless they appeared earlier than what you see in the list below.

For the more exotic countries, players appearing in North American pro or top junior leagues are of interest.

When time permits, I'll try to update it.

As a sidenote. From my extensive research it turned out that one of the wildest characters ever in the NHL, Steve Durbano, had the most impressive family history of them all. He was a direct descendant of many Kings and Queens (i.e. France, Italy, Germany, Scotland and the Roman Empire). I am sure that Steve's teammates wouldn't hear the end of it in the locker room if he had known. :DD

Cully Wilson played in the NHL in 19–20 with the St. Patricks and both his parents (Sigurdur Erlendsson, Metonia Indridadottir) were born in Iceland.

Not to get political, but there's no reason to put "Taiwan (China)". Everyone in the world, except the PRC, considers Taiwan a de facto independent country (which, functionally, it is entirely). Traditionally, you could say "Taiwan (Republic of China)", but even that is outdated nowadays. Why not do like the Taiwanese on their recent passports and just identify the island, by writing "Taiwan" alone?

(I remember doing a double-take years ago when I saw that Rod Langway had been born in Taiwan. Of course, it made sense when I saw his parents were stationed there, militarily. I myself lived in Taiwan off and on for a period of about 11 years.)

I try to stay away from Politics, but I agree with you on this one, so I removed "China".
Wikipedia have "the Republic of China" (ROC). I simply leave it as Taiwan. Thanks for the feedback.

But Taiwan is still officially referring to itself as "Republic of China", no?

Not on their passports. They still use "Republic of China" for some official purposes and such.

No, they did not vote to "get closer to China". That's not accurate.

Anyway, we're off topic.

Zach Bogosian was not the first NHLer with Armenian heritage.

Eddie Jeremiah played 15 games for the Bruins and Americans in 1931-32 (and would later coach Dartmouth for 20+ years), and was born to Armenian immigrants.

For whatever reason he was ignored or forgotten when talk of Bogosian being the first Armenian in the NHL.

You have quite many names on Estonian section (and from historical perspective Estonia isn´t that exotic hockey country). But... Mickey (Mihkel) Oja was born for Estonian parents year after they moved to Canada (as far as I know). Oja never played in NHL, but was in Blues camp in 1970. Also I believe that he had contract with them. Traded to Canadiens in 1972. Played in IHL, AHL and WHL.

But this is out from memory.. don´t have my notes.

Thanks for the info, that's excellent. His parents were born in Harpoot, which geographically is in Turkey, but they were ethnic Armenians. Great addition, thanks !

Thanks for that. I was actually aware of Oja, but totally forgot about him. I've added him to the list as he appeared quite early.

Last off topic post that is somewhat on-topic. The biggest Taiwan districts voted for KMT the party that wants closer ties with China. More accurate.
