It was "top 3-4", i.e. second pairing. Which is where MacDonald has played this entire decade under multiple coaches. So if you think Hakstol is the only coach who views him that way, you're wrong. Or just look at Girardi getting a top 4 role (ahead of Coburn) under Cooper this year. The league has a lot of 2nd pairing dmen with poor possession numbers.

The coincidence between those two teams he played for this decade?

They haven't won a single Playoff series with him in the lineup.

He's only played in 23 Playoff games in his 11 year career.

Sucks for him.

Being the 3/4 on the worst-rated Defense in the nhl for the islanders is where he was when we got him. When you’re the best of the worst, are you the best elsewhere? No.

Seeing the lengths current management is willing to go for Lappy, how long do you think manure brains will stick around?

Sorry for going there.. but what is the earliest possible season to discuss extension? 2018/19 or 2019/20?

I obviously also accept never as an answer but I was just wondering about when would we actually hear it.. since it seems like a... eh.. possibility.

Depends on how the upcoming season unfolds.

If Hextall makes only minor tweaks, and Hakstol takes the current roster plus a couple second/third tier players to 100+ points, a first round win, and they're competitive in the 2nd round (i.e. Pittsburgh this year with their "brilliant" coach) I think an extension is a slam dunk. He's paid to win, and if he wins, he's doing his job - "you are what your record says you are."

If they miss the playoffs without major injuries, Hakstol may need a new address.

Somewhere in between - Hextall might let him play out his contract and see if they take a big step forward in 2019-20.

The situation resolves itself, Hakstol was hired primarily to develop the young players Hextall drafted, how well they do the next couple years will depend on the development of those players, so if they're winning, he's doing his job.
