Was just looking over Finland's history of gold medals at the WJC (third all-time now behind only Canada and Russia). They sure like to win dramatically...

1987: Claimed gold on the final day with three straight goals in the third period, two by Pekka Tirkkonen, for a 5-3 win over the Czechs.
Canada could then claim gold with a four-goal win over the Soviets, but was instead disqualified for the infamous punch-up in Piestany (while leading 4-2 in the second). Players include Jukka-Pekka Seppo, Janne Ojanen, Markus Ketterer.

1998: Niklas Hagman scores at 13:41 of OT to beat Russia 2-1 for gold in Helsinki. Team includes Mika Noronen, Olli Jokinen, Niko Kapanen.

2014: More gold medal OT heroics, this time from Rasmus Ristolainen to beat the Swedes 3-2 in Malmo. Also on the team is Teuvo Teräväinen, Esa Lindell, Ville Pokka.

2016: Again in OT as Kasperi Kapanen scores on a wraparound to win 4-3 vs Russia again on home ice. Andrei Svetlakov had tied it for Russia at 19:54. Jesse Puljujarvi, Sebastian Aho and Patrik Laine lead the offense.

2019: A fluky last-minute reprieve against Canada, an OT penalty shot save, a broken Canadian stick on an open net followed by a Finish winner, then a game winner in the final with only 1:26 on the clock.

Finland have suffered. Way too much.

No Alexander Lukas on their side and that's for sure (Alexander Lukas – Wikipedia).Gladstone Gander - Wikipedia or rather Gladstone Gander.

Like for the Swedes.

All über the hockey years, and teams that is, of course.

Let us be happy now. There have been bad times in our hockey history. Stig Wetzel, Masken Karlsson, Mats Sundin, from 5-1 to 5-6, leading the final against the Czechs 2-0 in the third period, Milan 1994... And don’t forget about Juha Mieto and Finland-Hungary soccer game.

It's crazy how they went from that power house team with laine and Aho, to being almost relegated.
Well, they missed almost all those key players from the 2016 team. Either they were already overaged the next year or they played already in the NHL then. And the 1997 birth year players have been generally pretty bad for Finland (except Aho of course, whom also was then already in the NHL next year).

This is off-topic, but losing to Hungary in 1997 was good for us. Hungary progressed to the play off qualification and gets Yugoslavia. Lose 1 - 7 and 0 -5 for a 1-12 aggregate. We would have been thrashed in exactly the same manner.

Homer refs? Sweden was the best team that tournament

Are you frigging kidding me? Or did you not watch the Finals? I've never in my life seen such flop-sided, biased reffing (and I've been watching hockey for nearly twenty years). It was clear as a day the refs wanted the Swedes to win and would just about whistle against the Finns for any reason they could come up with. I think even some of the Swedes admitted as much. Maybe this had something to do with the Swedes being so confident of the victory, that they had parade and everything not only planned out but ready and in place. Justice prevailed that day, but such crapfest should never be allowed to happen in the first place.

Oh and I'm sure the Swedes were the better team on the paper just like pretty much every other big hockey nation that year, but we had 3 corner stones that turned the tide: Kivi (head coach), Teräväinen and Saros. Funnily they chose Forsberg as the best forward even when Teräväinen not only scored the most points than everyone else, but actually led the team to the gold medal (and assisted every single goal in the final game).

Yeah, considering how small country Finland is, the 2016 team is/was absurd in offense (we all knew that at the time though). NHL players (at least 1 game played) bolded:
Patrik Laine - Sebastian Aho - Jesse Puljujärvi
Aleksi Saarela - Julius Nättinen - Kasperi Kapanen
Antti Kalapudas - Roope Hintz - Mikko Rantanen
Kasper Björkqvist – Miska Siikonen - Juho Lammikko
Sebastian Repo

Joni Tuulola - Olli Juolevi
Niko Mikkola - Sami Niku
Miro Keskitalo - Vili Saarijärvi

Kaapo Kähkönen (Veini Vehviläinen)

If we do a combination of the three gold teams for 2010's, we have a decent roster for sure:
Patrik Laine - Sebastian Aho - Jesse Puljujärvi
Kaapo Kakko - Teuvo Teräväinen - Mikko Rantanen
Artturi Lehkonen - Roope Hintz - Kasperi Kapanen
Rasmus Kupari - Anton Lundell - Eeli Tolvanen
Saku Mäenalainen

Esa Lindell - Rasmus Ristolainen
Julius Honka - Henri Jokiharju
Ville Pokka - Urho Vaakanainen

Juuse Saros
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen

That could be a good WHC team.
