Forward Aleksander Barkov was the top-ranked prospect among skaters from Europe in the 2013 NHL Draft according to Central Scouting, so his being picked early in the draft did not come as a complete surprise.



But when Barkov was selected by the Florida Panthers with the second overall pick and defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen was selected by the Buffalo Sabres with the eighth overall pick a short time later, there was a lot of excitement in the Finnish hockey community.

"I was surprised and I was excited for that. It was a huge thing for Finland," said forward Arturri Lehkonen who would hear his own name called a short while later, going to the Montreal Canadians in the second round with the 55th pick overall.… read more
