It's very disappointing when you're a kid and you realize that while the figure four actually does hurt, flipping the other person onto their stomach does nothing to reverse it.

Back in the 80s it could sometimes be used to spice up a feud. After Verne Gagne beat Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA title with the Gagne sleeper, Bockwinkel adopted his own version of the sleeper (the Singapore Sling) as his finisher. In '84 Tito Santana was out of action for awhile after being injured by Greg Valentine's figure-four. When Santana returned to resume his feud with Valentine, he started using the figure-four as his finisher.
