If I'm Canada I try to lose in OT and guarantee 2nd place (obviously they wouldn't lose on purpose but still)

Puts USA/Russia/Finland on the other side of the bracket. Rather play Sweden in the semis than Russia

So does Russia and Germany team up to agree to have Russia win in OT and bank on the Czechs losing to a Canada?

That would be illegal, but it’d be a great scenario for both.

You just fuel every Russian junior team for years to come to play against Canada. Talk about winning the battle but giving up a lot for the war.

Plus, as any pro athlete will tell you, they're not gonna do that knowing full well how hard it is to get to the spot they're in.

There is no "other side of the bracket". After the QFs there's a reseed where the best team plays the worst.

I mean... a semi against Sweden, Russia, Finland or the US is going to be hard. Trying to separate the Big 5 nation's as stronger or weaker is not ideal. The key is to win the quarter!

I am so sad that the Czechs got a point today. Now gotta hope for a miracle win against Russia :(
You line up really well against Russia... just need to survive 5 on 5 and hope their powerplay doesn't wake up for this game. They can't be over confident with either goalie right now (it's Askarov tomorrow). You are definitely an underdog but you are a damn good team with 5 future NHLer's.

Thanks for this.. appreciate the table.

It's amazing that there is a Czech finish second option. Obviously unlikely.

If we finish third or fourth, I don't care as I'm not seeing that big a difference between Finland/Sweden (eg. we'd be big underdogs for both matchups).

I can't shake the thought of a late Russian lead with the Germans tying it in the dying seconds only for Russia to score in OT.lol

Regardless... I do feel it is unfair that one of the Czechs/Germans/Russians are playing Kazakhstan after tomorrow... Russians are gold medal calibre IMO, German's have been exceptional and great to watch.

When you say 'great scenario'....

For those teams it would be. Russia tops out at 3rd, which barring a Czech win that result would give them. Germany would absolutely take a single point if given the choice and take their chances. Not a great result for everyone(Czechs obviously) but I'd venture to guess that both teams would take that option now if they had the choice. I doubt they'd ever rig it to make that happen though.

The groups definitely weren't balanced. The two teams that should be battling in the relegation series are in the same pool.
