Leafs send Abbott, McKegg, Percy and Broll down in first wave of cuts. Eight or nine more to come, including waivers at noon.

    David Alter ‏@DavidAlter590 6m
Smith, bodie, mcintyre, holzer, brennan on waivers #leafs

    Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 3m
Jean Michael Liles also on waivers in TOR.

    Liles :(

Guess we couldn't find a trade for him, no tweets on Rielly yet.

I really have to wonder if Liles going down is more money saving than... just spending his time down there. I really do feel for the guy. I almost wish someone picks him up so he can just play but i doubt it. I am surprised re: Bodie though.

He might not be going down. Could just be offered up for free in hopes that a team takes him.

Hmm... Well if Liles gets claimed, MacWilliam might stay up... interesting.

I like that this proves liles has no value around the league.

Have to think Rielly would be more likely than MacWilliam. That would be 7 D.

Correct. Still great to see a former 7th rounder make it to final cuts. MacWilliam will be a regular on this team one day.

So right now our 7 D are...

    Gunnar - Phaneuf
    Gardiner - Franson
    Ranger/Rielly/Fraser combining for 3rd pairing?

or it shows that we're in a cap crunch and need to send a big contract down to save 925K (or whatever the #amount is)...?

I would love for Leivo to make the team, what a great pick he was.

    James Reimer ($1.800m)

    OTHER

    Buyout: Darcy Tucker ($1.000m)
    Buyout: Colby Armstrong ($1.000m)
    Buried: John-Michael Liles ($2.950m)

RETAINED SALARY TRANSACTIONS (0.778% of upper limit)

    Matt Frattin ($0.437m—0.5%)
    Ben Scrivens ($0.062m—0.1%)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)

    SALARY CAP: $64,300,000
    CAP PAYROLL: $64,706,667
    BONUSES: $732,500
    CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $325,833

That's just enough to ice a full roster on opening night, with Clarkson and McLaren unavailable, but zero extra players and no caproom......and with Rielly sent back to junior.

if they want to keep Rielly, they gotta send someone else down. either Fraser/Ranger or go with 11 forwards.

Nonis kinda really ****ed up this offseason.

So this leaves a 23 man roster plus clarkson and mclaren. Once Liles fails to clear waivers, there's no chance it's a cap compliant roster, but that might be it for today.

edit: I guess I missed Leivo. I think you can forget this post. :D

I don't JML being put on waivers in itself "proves" that he has negative value. I think Nonis likes the luxury of having JML available in case he's needed.

Back to the Marlies, I think he's going to need at least another full year in the Marlies to prove he's ready to make the jump. I think Rielly might be taking his job this year. Percy also looks like he's overtaken Blacker in the rankings.

    Also, thanks Ulf!

I liked that smurf line that we had last night, very fast and creative. I bet we see Abbott up this year.

    James Mirtle @mirtle
So Leafs cuts in total: Abbott, Broll, Percy, McKegg, Liles, Bodie, Smith, Holzer, MacIntyre, Brennan. Takes them down to 26 players.

    VanR - Bozak - Kessel
    Lupul - Kadri - (Clarkson)
    Raymond - Bolland - Kulemin
    Ashton - McClement - Orr
    (McLaren) - Leivo - Devane

    Gunnar - Phaneuf
    Gardiner - Franson
    Fraser - Ranger
    MacWilliam - Rielly

    Reimer
    Bernier

    That's 25 guys....so I'm missing one guy left - who am I missing?
