Potvin, in talking about the 1996 fight, remembered looking up ice and seeing Hextall roaring down the ice toward him.
“You just get ready and hope for the best,†Potvin recalled.
Hextall had a big size advantage against Potvin and much more experience in fighting
Both goalies had their masks on for the first few moments as they grappled. Replays show Potvin attempting to pry Hextall’s mask off, but Potvin’s mask came off first. Both players then rained several blows on each other as they got their jerseys off.
The skirmish carried on for quite some time before fatigue set in and the fight became more of a bear hug.
“At the end of the fight, we were exhausted,†Potvin recalled.
Hextall’s face was bloodied by Potvin. Still, according to a fan poll on hockeyfights. com, Hextall was declared the winner of the fight by 42.5 per cent of voters. Potvin was declared the winner by 38.4 per cent of voters.
The former Leaf said he and Hextall had no hard feelings after.
“We laughed about it,†Potvin said.
He said he remembers his Leaf teammates being surprised by the goalie fight and maybe “a little nervous†for Potvin’s safety.
