Pisani was the guy who lived every young hockey players dream. He didn't win the cup but "local boy goes from being a third line nobody to playoff superstar" is a good story. He gets additional love for his battle with colitis.

Every team has those guys who will be remembered in a city SIGNIFICANTLY longer than the rest of the league does, and Pisani is one of those guys in Edmonton. Obviously he was no where near the talent of Shane Doan but I like him more.

never liked Doan. Pisani I remember from those commercials he did for Ulcerative collitis medicine back in 06, used to think he must have been a real star to be in a commercial.

Honestly, if i could switch my vote, i think you guys have swayed me to do it. Still probably just Pisani'ing in the wind based on the results right now. But solid points.

Pisani has a legacy that is so much bigger than what he ever was as a player. He was kinda...nothing, and yet...i know a weird amount about him, and he's kinda fixed in my brain.

Shane Doan is kinda the opposite really. He's always kinda felt to me like one of those players who draws an unusual amount of reverence for an actually kinda pedestrian career. Just really sealed the deal when he just seemed all too content to play out his final games in the middle of some desert so he could golf more or whatever. Plus, he just looked too much like Keanu Reeves dude.

Doan was the captain for 13 years and scored almost 1,000 points with the same franchise. That's not a "pedestrian career" by any stretch of imagination.

Fair. Perhaps i should have made it more clear, i meant "pedestrian" relative to the sort of pedestal he often seems to be put on, reputation-wise. He was obviously a very good player for a long time, and it's cool that he stuck it out with one "franchise" the whole time. But nothing much ever really happened with Doan punching his ticket for a dozen+ years with that same franchise. Just sorta comes across as putting in his time in the sun, collecting his points, doing a bit of golf, and checking out. Just doesn't really align with the reverence he's often treated with, or the whole "heart and soul guy" reputation he seems to have, based on some brief stints of international tournament play?

He's kinda like...the anti-Rick Nash. Who often caught flak for being "selfish", etc. But the guy actually made his way to the top, elite levels of the league...despite spending much of the best parts of his career stuck on a team that also spent most of its time spinning its wheels. Then catches flak again for requesting that he be moved to a team where he thought he actually could get something accomplished.

There's "loyalty" to a franchise...and then there's just "complacency".

Brutal take.

Watch Doan play. He did it for over 20 years and it’s not like he was out there floating. He played a physical, team-first style. To say he was “checking out” is asinine.

But this just goes to show that fans will find something to complain about. Players are either distractions or they don’t care about winning enough.
