1993 Leaf Set was a classic that went well with EA's hockey game.

Red Ace series is pretty nice. Front doesn't even look like a hockey card but just a photo with a discreetly printed name on.

Speaking of horizontal cards, in full flight, Alexander Mogilny.

I have never heard of it, but I love those. Clean and tidy.

I misremembered and probably confused the Fedorov card. That's the one I meant. Total Fedorov it is though:

Here is another one I came this || close to getting, but the guy chickened out at last, although you could get it for peanuts then, but it's one of the few 90s cards that have actually grown in price without having a piece of fabric and DNA samples in it:

My favorite was the 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee set of 341 cards as they also included the WHA as part of the collection. The main reason why I have always liked O-Pee-Chee is that each card will list the stats for all seasons played by that player whereas newer card companies such as Upper Deck only include the last 5 years or so (it could be more but definitely not all the years of that particular player).

Yes, that was the first year I collected, in Grade Three, so it is the standard against which all hockey cards are judged by me. I remember that we didn't really know what the WHA cards were about, even though we were in Winnipeg, so no one really wanted them very much. Having said that, I still have the four Jets that I got that year, which didn't include the Hull card (I believe they were were Beaudin, McDonald, Hornung and Bordeleau). I wish I still had the Ottawa Nationals punch-out logo sticker card that I remember having at one point (before punching it out and sticking it on something). The other thing was that the cards were issued in series, and different stores just carried one series. So since we were eight year olds who could only buy cards at one or two neighbourhood stores we were allowed to go to, we really didn't have any access to half the cards. That was the case for a number of years.

It wasn't until the late 70's when I started subscribing to Sports Collectors Digest that I learned of O-Pee-Chee and that Canadian hockey sets had many more cards than what we were getting with Topps down in the States! And WHA sets!! Needless to say I went on a spending spree buying boxes and/or sets of the previous WHA years.

Especially like the inclusion of those not often seen on hockey cards:

Yeah. But not to downgrade base cards i don't envy anyone wanting to get a Lord Stanley autograph card since it obviously would take one of those cut autos. One might as well go to an auction themself and bid for any document of his, although a card always look nicer than a boring document all day. At least as long as its not an important document that you could frame, but that will cost you.

They should get one of his suits and cut it up for many to enjoy.

I always assumed the pre 1988 cards were all topps cards for all sports. Just now found out in this thread they were o-pee-Chee for hockey.

Both Topps and O-Pee-Chee had cards made. They were identical, though the Topps set had fewer cards made up.

There are four hockey card sets that stand out to me, and are my favorites to get signed.

1971-1972 Topps

1992-1993 Pinnacle

2001 Fleer Greats of the Game

2008-2009 Upper Deck Legend Masterpieces

I also like the 2006-2007 Upper Deck Parkhurst on a smaller scale as the others.

I guess the most important to me is 1965 first Finnish hockey card (more of actually picture) series because I got those when I was kid in 80´s. Played part in getting interested on hockey history for me.

In all honesty not really a collector.I had some in late 80´s early 90´s series, but used them more for throwing and made games out of them. Though once when I was really drunk I almost bought Jim Jones from the 1911 series. For quite a money. Huge fan of Chief Jones, but that would have been quite... well.

OT but out of interest do they actually cut actual player jerseys to make those cards (I guess). I don´t know what to think about it.

Yup, and i can tell you seem to be located in the cross fire between card collectors and collectors of complete game used jerseys. The latter are generally not too fond of the shredding business as you might can emagine. But the way i see it is that you theoretically can make about 5,000 jersey cards of a single jersey which will make it much more viable for many people compared to paying what could it be now for a McDavid gamer... $10,000? $15,000? I'm not sure since i'm not exactly in the market for one.
In reality though there will not be 5,000 cards from one jersey becouse some rarer sets uses much larger swatches of jersey in them, for example the Mikita one i posted last page. I guess a now defunct licenced company named Pacific might have done it 15 years ago, their patch cards are common enough that i had Straka sign one when he came here recently with HC Plzen for the Champion Hockey League semis against my hometown team Frölunda. It pretty much ruins its value especially since i did not take a photo of the signing. Certified autographs from packs is another matter becouse they are licenced either by the NHLPA or in Leaf trading cards case by individual players.

I paid 10 cents last week to get one. Now I'm missing only 14 cards from that set.

EDIT: Silver version is more expensive. That's normal gold version on the pic?

Will join others in saying the 84-85 O-Pee-Chee set is a classic and to me the best ever. Great design and by far the best photography of any set of pre-1990 cards.

________

Every time there’s a hockey card thread here and cards with cut-up jersey chunks on them get mentioned I get mad all over again. What a disgrace that anyone ever thought mutilating a beautiful piece of memorabilia was a good idea.
