With how our right side is looking, trading Faulk by July 1 seems to be all but inevitable. So who would be looking to add him and what pieces could be coming back?

Buffalo - Defense is bad but they also have risto
Targets: package for O'Reilly, Reinhart

Chicago - There were already trade rumors
Targets: Saad

Edmonton - Less likely with them drafting Bouchard
Targets: RNH, puljujarvi

Islanders - Their defense sucks
Targets: maybe nelson or ho-sang?

Tampa
Targets: Johnson or could package for a bigger fish

Toronto
Targets: Desire would be nylander but it doesn't seem realistic

Rangers
Targets: namestnikov, zibanejad

How about Faulk to Detroit for 1st 2019? If Detroit wins top 3 pick in 2019, we get 1st + 3rd in 2020. I'm thinking Detroit's first in 2019 will be very close to a lottery pick. They have very few assets I actually want on their hockey team. Larkin would be amazing but of course we aren't getting Larkin for Faulk. What I would love about Faulk for DET 1st is that this gives us a massive asset for the future. Right now Faulk's value is decent but it diminishes as his contract gets closer to expiring. The value of a 1st is very high, and we could leverage that as a main piece or sweetener later on.

I wonder if it would be best to package Skinner, Faulk, and a pick/prospect. Prior to Kovalchuk being signed by the Kings there was a little chatter about Skinner and Toffoli (change of scenery type of thing). Not sure that still exists, but I wonder if you could throw out a Skinner (50% retained) + Faulk + 2019 2nd round pick (or comparable prospect) for Toffoli and Muzzin?

I like your posts Ope, but that's an awful trade proposal. 2 sweeteners to boot.

I would do that, but would Minnesota? I'd be willing to add one of our young checkers to get it done.

Looks like Zucker is available for whatever reason (as well as Coyle and Nino). Might be looking for a big contract. They have Spurgeon and Dumba (RFA) at RHD so it would only make sense if they also were planning on moving Dumba. Similarly to the Canes and Calgary, Minnesota is looking for a bit of a different look.

Similar to Lindholm and Hanifin, Minnesota is talking new RFA contracts with Zucker and Dumba and might not want to pay up on long-term deals. Due to their current team makeup two big extensions (more like $6+ million in their case) would limit their ability to make meaningful roster changes.

Seems like it absolutely has to be for a center. We’re down to Staal and Rask as the only surefire centers left on the roster. Maybe Necas can handle the job (but maybe he can’t), maybe RB wants Aho to move over (but maybe he doesn’t). Unless Aho moves over, none of these guys is a clear option for 1C. And we still have matchup issues with Necas and Rask in the lineup.

That’s a lot of question marks at a critical position. Meanwhile we’ve got a couple of substantial trade pieces who could pull a quality return. Seems like a no-brainer.

My thought is that Skinner and Toffoli are essentially a wash, both coming off down years, but you've got an extra year w/Toffoli. Muzzin is a little cheaper than Faulk, hence the draft pick. Jake Muzzin has quietly put up 40 or more points in 3 of his last 4 seasons. Plus it fixes our LHD problem in the short term.

If anyone would take Darling with him and give back at least a good (preferably excellent) goalie, I think it would be worth. Saving lot of money and solving somehow the goalie-issue is what should be on target. You do nothing even with another superstar-leve layer if you still have to go with Darling-level goalie.

It is completely unrealistic.

Most fans up here feel like Gardiner would go back that other way.
Which I'm not sure I see the point for you guys.

So, it would seem, we aren't a good match.

Also, I don't imagine we do anything until we figure out what JT does.

Kadri for Faulk+ is what I'd hope for. Maybe Toronto considers if Tavares picks them.

We only have 2 NHL centers signed for next season. We're in no position to be trading them. Particularly not one on a high value contract.

Fair enough. I was under the assumption that most Toronto fans saw Nylander at C eventually.

I hope Toronto, Dallas, or SJ lands Tavares. Anywhere out of the division that isn't Boston. That may shake a Center out somewhere.

Agree, I listed them because I've seen media rumors/speculation. But a Connor brown/kapanen isn't enough while nylander/kadri would be way too much for Faulk. Plus, he doesn't seem like the kind of d you'd be looking for. He can be good defensively, but I'm guessing you'll be looking more towards a tanev?

He probably is. And if we don't get JT, it's likely this coming season.
But that doesn't change the fact that C is probably the most thin position we have organizationally. We have some good looking D prospects in the system. None at C tbh.

Well I'm not hugely up on Faulk but the consensus seems to be, he'd be like swapping hands for Gardiner. Which would work well with me. We have 3 LHD that are almost carbon copies of each other. We have almost nothing on the right side unless Zaitsev returns to the form he showed most of his first season.
