Seems like it is an insurance move in-case Pietrangelo heads out after next season.

If Pietrangelo decides to re-sign, I assume that means we trade Faulk at next years draft? Top-4 RHD on a reasonable, long-term contract, seems to be highly coveted these days.

Or is there another trade on the horizon?

Anyways, **** it, lets go win another cup

Yeah, that is a good point. Assuming there is no NTC (and I pray that there isn't) then maybe the plan is to consider moving him next offseason if Petro re-signs.

Something I noticed is that Faulk's 156 hits would have led the Blues by about 20 over Maroon. I've never heard anyone say Faulk is a tough player, but just thought that was interesting.

Bouwmeester/Dunn - Pietrangelo
Parayko - Faulk
Bouwmeester/Dunn - Bortuzzo

???

I don't know.

I'm scared.

I think Parayko could work out on the left side. His skating and monsterous wingspan could translate over to his opposite side better than anyone else on the roster I think. Imagine trying to go wide on Parayko if he's on the left side...he can be at the dots and still reach the damn boards.

3) Everyone in Carolina thinks he was a bad fit on the powerplay and are glad to have him off. He got the minutes but wasn't necessarily the stud I think a lot of people are assuming.

McCurdy's analytics disagree with this. Their PP wasn't elite with him on the ice, but it was terrible without him. They were a +6% threat with an above-average number of shots from right in front of the crease with him on the ice for 242 PP minutes this year. In 160 PP minutes without him, Carolina was a -19% threat overall and didn't get much at all from near the crease.

I don't understand this move at all. Yes Faulk adds some offense to our back end but I just don't understand how he or his contract is going to fit. If Army plans on making Faulk a Pietro replacement it will be the single biggest mistake of his career.

I think it's too early to say this has anything to do with Petro. I think it's more likely that they plan on playing Faulk on the left in the top 4. Occam's razor, people.
I'm not sure the theory that requires the least speculation is that a right handed D who typically plays on the right side will now play on the left.

Short term, we have upgraded the right hand side.

Long term, i don't see him here after the expansion draft if Petro re-signs. If Petro walks, I would rather have Parayko and Faulk vs Parayko and Bortz.

I'm interested to see what this means for a guy like Reinke who I saw as a potential puck moving 3rd pairing RD in the coming years.

This..Agreed

1. Going all-in for the cup this year

2. If Pietrangelo re-signs, we flip Faulk and likely get a really good haul for him
If not, well, Parayko and Faulk will be your 1 and 2 instead of Parayko and a bunch of ????'s

Front office is planning for the future while still making us better this year...Much better than going all in on Pietrangelo only for him to sign elsewhere and your left with just Parayko and bottom pairing guys.

To me the odd man out in the Faulk signing might be Schenn. Schenn is at $5.125 M, UFA after this season. The Blues have some young talent to take his spot, namely Robert Thomas. Petro is a UFA after the season right now at $6.5M. J Bo is a UFA agent after this season at $3.250
So there is more than enough money to sign Petro if Schenn moves on. Faulk adds to a dismal power play, he make a good D better, he helps with the risk if Petro leaves, could be a potential Seattle pick ( GM Ron Francis knows him), and he makes a Stanley Cup Champion better. Why not go for it. Long term but not upset at all with the trade.

Sometimes players are a bad fit on a team. Remember Buffalo and Philly fans saying O'Reilly and Schenn were PP specialists that could score during 5v5.

Contract has full NTC first 5 years. Does that have a bearing on the expansion draft or just NMC?

for those numbers above, faulk will probably be 2nd pk and 2nd pp, even on the 3rd pair itll put him around or above minutes if the 2nd pair lefty
I imagine that he'll be 1st PP, which is good because it saves Petro's minutes (or Parayko's) for ES and PK
