You almost get exasperated with Gretzky reading through lists like this. It's like, "Dude, give someone else a %#*(&%ing chance, please."

By the time you're down to 1700 points, and see he did it 170 games faster than Lemieux, it's just eye rollingly dominant.

But seriously, I love it every time I see Wayne's dominance expressed in a new way. Thanks for posting.

Damn, I forgot how dominant Lindros was. Then you factor in his physical play and intimidation factor. Wow.

Wonderful post, Vujtek. Thanks.

Fascinating stuff here, watching the sizeable pack of fast-starting, non-HHOF >PPG guys fall away, slowly at first, but picking up steam as the group approaches a decade in the league.

The transitional event between 300 and 400 points, where Orr goes from just sneaking onto the top 50 to - a mere 54 games later - holding the league record for quickest to the plateau.

Watching Orr and Bossy slowly climb into the upper reaches as they haul in other guys. What would they have done with good knees and a strong back?

Seeing Bossy - still third all-time in career PPG today - overtake Stastny, who began in his mid-twenties and was clearly out of gas 750 games later.

Linemates Trottier and Bossy each re-setting the mark at the 400/500/600 plateaus, before Wayne blocks Bossy from matching Trottier's four-in-a-row achievement.

The late-maturing Esposito sneaking into the "bubbling under" for a couple of plateaus before bursting up the list, setting some benchmarks along the way and eventually cresting in the still-top three by the 1200 mark.

Wayne hitting 2000 quicker than the once-record for 900.

Amazing stuff!!

Fastest player to 100 Points: Newsy Lalonde?! Who's that? And why didn't he become a great hockey player?

Will be interesting to see how high on the list McDavid will make it, if he makes the list at all that is. McDavid will head into the season with 48 points in 45 games. The only active players to have reached their 100th career point before their 100th NHL game are:

16. Alexander Ovechkin 77 GP
23. Sidney Crosby 80
32. Evgeni Malkin 89
Paul Stastny 99

Probably shouldn't rule out Artemi Panarin (77 points in 80 games so far) making the list too. Going to be close one with him.

A couple of names that kind of jump out at me on the 100 and 200-points list are Neal Broten and Joe Juneau. They didn't quite keep up that pace...

Recent posters saying Lindros was a disappointing rookie or never achieved his potential should look closely at his rankings up 700 points or so.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but if Gretzky reached 2000pts in 857 GP...that means he reached 2000pts faster than anyone else even reached 1200pts (excluding Lemieux).. Is that right or am I interpreting the list wrong? Because if it's true that's just ridiculous.

He also scored his second block of 1000 points (i.e., points 1001-2000) faster than anyone else scored their first 1000.

I think the 600 point mark is a bit more relevant looking at Lindros in hindsight. I believe he eclipsed the mark some time in the '99/00 season, when is of course when his career got blown up. Six hundred points is a pretty decent chunk, and despite all the games that Lindros missed over those first 8 seasons (well over 100 games), and despite playing into the DPE, only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Peter Stastny, Mike Bossy, and Jari Kurri got there faster. One game quicker than Crosby, even, who had missed roughly 50 games up to the point HIS career was similarly rocked shortly after breaking 600.

People who never saw him play question if/how long he was considered the best player in the game during his prime. Conversely, people who watched as he dominated while clicking over the point odometer in the early days don't need any convincing. And when you consider how many other names are mentioned in favourable comparison with Lindros at the time, and how relatively few players are described in terms of "sharing a tier" with Crosby, it seems like the mid-'90s really was a golden age for talent.

While it's notable to mention, I wouldn't say this had a huge affect on his numbers and not as much as an effect as DPEII on Crosby's. The DPE didn't really kick in until 96/97.

The NHL started before 2000. And just because you never heard of a player, doesn't mean they aren't good, because Lalonde was one of the best players of all time

Being that generous with the starting point, that encompasses over 240 of the 429 games it took him to get 600, btw. Well over half.

It's interesting that every single one of the early players on the "fastest to 100" list is either way down, or nowhere to be found on the 200 point list. Really speaks to how scoring levels yo-yo'd up and down in the early years, as the NHL settled on a few major rule changes.

From March '82 to Dec '82, Gretzky put 100 points in 39 games. Gross.

What's more gross is that that isn't his most impressive feat.
