The cost will be large on LE.

Less so on Sutter.

There’s always a price for a deal and knowing Benning and him being allergic to picks, I can easily see picks being given away to get a deal done.

Detroit and Ottawa seem the likeliest of destinations (obviously).

Given the way their contracts are structured it'll be a tough sell. Eriksson has a back diving (slightly) contract that wouldn't really be appealing to someone like melnyk. I agree with another poster in here that sutter is absolutely an easier sell, but it would still cost assets to move him without taking on another bad contract. The saving grace is that sutter is ufa prior to petterson and Hughes needing contracts and Eriksson can be bought out next year with the cap implications not being as harsh

Sutter and Loui are 2 different cases.

Sutter his deal expires in 2021. Not a great cap hit at $4.3 given that he doesn’t score enough and isn’t an elite defensive forward for that cap hit. But his deal expiring in 2021 is important because the Canucks have $20 mill of expiring contracts in 2021 with Sutter being one of those players. They would have to replace 4 roster places so that will cost between $3.6-$4 mill of the $20 mill that comes off. That leaves $16 mill to then transfer to Pettersson and Hughes who needs new deals. So what good does moving Sutter do if you are going to lock his cap hit onto another player with term? Would mean that they definitely need to shed a player with a contract for 21-22 season to gain cap room to sign the cornerstones.

Eriksson has 2 years left. It’s such a big cap hit and still $5 mill in cash. The assets required to move him are too high. Best case would be to retain 50% this he costs another team $1.25 mill per in actual cash. That is way more palatable under the covid situation.

Canucks really should not do anything unless on their big board they note down the salary cap for the 21-22 season and put in like $18 mill as a placeholder for Hughes and Pettersson. No contract should be offered to Tanev, Toffoli, Markstrom, or even moving out the guys whose contracts expires next season unless whatever they do with the cap space fits in after Hughes and Petey get their money.

just don’t know if this organization is capable of thinking past this season. Cause they went all in when they used up the last of the cap to sign Ferland without moving out Sven B first.

Sutter:

17 pts in 44 games prorates to about 30 pts a season
only 1 year left
Positive +/- guy this year
6 pts in 17 playoff games
Experienced guy

Could be useful to a team looking to shore up their bottom 6, especially if theres some salary retention

Ferland will go LTIR also

Thats about 6 mill saved there.

If only Eriksson would retire ... then they'd be really set lol

Best chance the Canucks have is to attach an attractive piece like Demko or Virtanen and move a bad contract.

will be hard to move these guys especially with the cap no increasing. Cap space is at an all time premium and both of these guys are absolute plugs.

maybe Sutter improved his value from an F to a C-. Eriksson has negative value and should be bought out.

maybe they could recoup a 3rd rounder if they attached Virtanen to Sutter.

3 of Sutters playoff points came in 1 game. He’s pure trash. Maybe if a team needs the cap floor and thinks he could be a pk guy then maybe. But he has been an absolute anchor since his arrival....

Mckewen will easily replace him.

Virtanen/Demko + Sutter would be interesting as a Sens fan; I'd make Tierney available for that package, or part/all of the return for Tierney in a separate trade (something like a 2nd and 4th, most likely).

Sutter pretty much sucks, but he could fill Tierneys role (albeit as a reasonable downgrade) and I suspect he'd be a good veteran presence off the ice and in practice. Virtanen would fit our style perfect, and Demko would provide Hogberg with some good NHL-ready competition. Dont think they could form an amazing tandem, but certainly has the potential to be league average as a duo.

At the end of the day the ultimate goal has to include clearing cap space in 2021 to sign the cornerstones.

so if you move Sutter are you really going to spend all of his cap hit on his replacement and for term?

you can move Sutter if the goal is to change up the bottom 6. I think with covid teams want short term deals at the bottom on the roster.

so Sutter at $2.2-$3 makes sense for some teams. But for the Canucks they can’t go around spending cap space long term until they lock their cornerstones.

If a family wants to pay down their mortgage on a yearly basis they know it’s coming up. Maybe that means you sacrifice a fancy vacation to do it. Petey and Hughes are your mortgage, the cornerstone. Everything else is a vacation or car or electronics. You can do without.

Virtanen and Sutter for a 2nd? Sold from this Canucks fan.

If nothing else you have hit in one thing about Sutter, he is a class act, guys love him, and off ice would be a great locker room guy.

actually serious here, wouldn't be surprised if some kind of deal for seabrook works out here with vancouver.

seabrook a BC native and Hawks/nucks discussed trading seabrook to Vancouver during the 2019 draft

Yeah, I think I would do that contingent on us being able to move some salary elsewhere. It would probably be a late one, but I think Virtanen is worth a late first at least and Sutter isnt a huge minus for us. 3.5m salary with a 4.5m caphit, only 1 yr left, Gud Veteran Guy... seems right up our alley.

Unless Seabrook has some career threatening concussions that haven't been disclosed that will, without question, have him retire as soon as the ink is dry on the trade, there is no reason for us to take him, even if we assume Eriksson is going back the other way.

There are very few centres this year in UFA so I have little doubt they can get someone to bite on Sutter with some retention

He did have surgery on each hip and shoulder earlier in year (Thus ending his 2020 season)

But he believes he can still play in NHL and is showing no signs of hanging em up
