At Fenway Park, Roger Clemens sets a MLB record for strikeouts by fanning 20 Seattle Mariners in a 3-1 Red Sox win.

At the Montreal Forum, Claude Lemiuex scores in OT in Game 7 against Hartford to send Montreal to the Wales Conference Final.

And that was one day before this:

On May 12, 1970, two days after Bobby Orr’s iconic Cup winning goal, Ernie Banks hit HR #500 (9th player to ever do so at the time)

All I got is Joe Carter hitting his 1993 WS winning home run the same night the Leafs set a record with their 10th straight win to start the season.

On January 4, 1986, Eric Dickerson ran for an all-time NFL playoff single-game record 248 rushing yards.

Two days earlier on January 2, Mike Bossy became the 11th member of the 500 goal club.

April 5, 1987- The debut of the FOX television network, which marked the first time since the mid-1950s in which 4 US TV networks had primetime programming.

One day prior on 4/4, Denis Potvin became the first defenseman in NHL history to record 1000 points.

On the same day Nashville hosted its first ever Stanley Cup Final game, Albert Pujols became the 9th player in baseball history to join the 600 HR club.

He did so while hitting a grand slam, becoming the first player to ever join the 500+ HR club while hitting a grand slam.

It was part of a day that saw an MLB record 7 grand slams in 1 day, as well as the only no-hitter of the 2017 season thrown:

:thumbu: That is the basic idea of this thread.

On the same day the Oklahoma City Thunder advance to their first NBA Finals in team history, the New Jersey Devils stave off elimination in the Stanley Cup Finals and deny L.A. not only a Cup sweep at home, but a chance to tie the 1988 Oilers' 16-2 record, still the best in any playoff year since the first round was expanded in '87

The MOVE bombing in Philadelphia, which took place on May 13, 1985, occurred during the Wales (and Campbell) Conference Finals, which involved the Philadelphia Flyers. The bombing occurred on an off day during the series (actually both series); the Flyers/Nordiques (and Oilers/Blackhawks) series was tied at 2-2 at the time of the bombing.

On the same night as Larry Bird's famous playoff steal in game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Detroit Pistons, the Philadelphia Flyers came back from a 3-1 deficit in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Edmonton, a game in which Edmonton was so confident of victory that parade plans appeared in that day's papers.

Today marks the 33 year anniversary.

There was a story where IIRC Edmonton newspapers published something about a victory parade plan before the SCF game

Martin Luther King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, the same night that 4 of the 6 Expansion teams from that season were playing in their first ever Stanley Cup Playoff games

On the same night as the first NFL playoff game schedule for a primetime start (8:00, all NFL playoff games before then always had earlier starts), Brendan Shanahan joined the 1000 point club AND Eric Lindros made his return to Philadelphia as a member of the opposition

Revisiting this topic, since it’s quite fascinating.

* Successful end of the Mayaguez Incident, in which U.S. Marines rescued the crew of the SS Mayaguez which had been seized by the Khmer Rouge (Cambodia)
* Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Flyers and Sabres at The Spectrum, marking the first time in over a half century that no Original Six team was playing in the Finals

John Gacy was executed the same day as the Rangers clinched the conference semifinals in 1994.

That reminds me, the Canes/Caps 2OT game 7 happened the same night as the execution of John William King, one of the 3 men responsible for one of the most gruesome murders in American history and by some accounts the "mastermind" behind the crime.

5/31/2002:

One of the more controversial playoff games in NBA history- Lakers/Kings, Game 6, 2002 NBA Western Conference finals, a game marred by very shaky officiating (27 Lakers free throws in the 4th quarter)- as well as the New Jersey Nets clinching an improbable NBA Finals berth in a worst-to-first season borg took place on the same Friday night as the Red Wings win over Colorado in game 7 of the Western Conference Finals where Patrick Roy famously got lit up for 4 goals in the first period and got pulled midway through the second once it got to 6-0.

Yep I remember that one. Such a bullshit series that was, Kings got robbed.

On the same night Brett Hull scored his 500th goal, the Washington Redskins played their final game at RFK Stadium and the second year Jacksonville Jaguars, one year after expansion, make the playoffs in improbable fashion:
