On April 2, 1972, New York Mets' manager Gil Hodges -- he of the 1969 Miracle Mets -- passed away during spring training from a sudden heart attack after playing golf and the day before the baseball season opener. That same day was the finale of the 1971-72 NHL season. The Flyers needed a win or a tie to advance to the playoffs but Buffalo scored with four seconds to play in the third period in a game between the two teams.

On the same night as Larry Bird's famous playoff steal in game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Detroit Pistons, the Philadelphia Flyers came back from a 3-1 deficit in game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Edmonton, a game in which Edmonton was so confident of victory that parade plans appeared in that day's papers.

Wayne Gretzky is traded to Los Angeles.... Alan Napier who played Alfred the Butler on the original Batman TV Series starring Adam West & Burt Ward dies at 85. :(

And no, not a "big game" but a "game changer".

Heaven's Gate cult suicides happened the same day as the Red Wings/Avalanche Brawl.

I don't know why I keep thinking that happened in the 1980s. Maybe because when I think of the 1980s I still sometimes think "20 years ago". Wow, 1997 was 20 years ago.

By the way, not about hockey, but the day Frank Sinatra died was the same day of the final episode of Seinfeld.

Lucille Ball died the day after Mario's 8 point playoff night in 1989 vs. Philly

This is two sports moments however both are still significant at least in my opinion. From October 7-28 in 1993 the Maple Leafs were on their 10 game winning streak. On October 23, 1993 the Leafs defeated the Lightning to improve their record at 9-0-0 and on the same night the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Philadelphia Phillies to win the World Series on Joe Carter's walk off home run.

Not a true famous moment in hockey but the Sabres finished their sweep of the Habs on that night as well.

Magglio Ordonez of the Detroit Tigers hits a walkoff home run in game 4 of the ALCS to clinch the AL Pennant for a Tiger team that had lost 96, 106, 119, 91, and 90 in the five previous seasons from 2001-2005. The franchise had not had a winning record since 1993 and had not made a postseason appearance since 1987.

That was on the same night Mats Sundin scored his 500th goal in OT to complete a hat trick while the Leafs were shorthanded

April 18th, 1942: Toronto defeated Detroit to claim the '42 Stanley Cup. Over 2.5 million fans listened to the action on radio which was the biggest audience hockey history to hear a broadcast at the time.

Meanwhile ...

Jimmy Doolittle's B-25's take off from the USS Hornet from deep in the Western Pacific that morning. The raids on Nagoya, Tokyo and Yokohama are a great boost of morale for Americans whose diet has been mostly bad news.

I was at the game when Sundin scored his 500th goal and it was the greatest experience I ever had being at a Leafs game.

Surprised you didn't mention that they became the only team ever to win a Cup Final after trailing a series 3-0.

Because I'm a Beatle-maniac...

February 6th, 1958
- A still 14-year-old George Harrison's first-ever appearance with The Quarrymen (incl. John and Paul) at Wilson Hall, Garston, Liverpool
- Chicago Blackhawks beat Boston 4-1 at the Gah-den, with rookie Bobby Hull scoring twice

April 1st, 1961
- The Beatles play their first night of a 13-week stay at the Top-Ten Club in Hamburg, Germany (their personal favorite of four venues they played in Hamburg)
- Detroit beats Toronto 3-2 to advance to the Stanley Cup Final; Chicago blanks Montreal 3-0 to take a three-two series lead, and would finish the Habs off three nights later to reach the Finals

Nov. 9th, 1961
- Brian Epstein sees The Beatles live at the Cavern Club for the first time
- Detroit beats Boston at the Olympia 2-1 (winning goal by Norm Ullman with 54-seconds left); Montreal handles Toronto 5-2 behind a Claude Provost hat-trick (the first of only two in his career).

Jan. 1st, 1962
- The Beatles (John, Paul, George, and Pete) audition for Decca Records in London, and are ultimately unsuccessful
- Stan Mikita scores 1 goal and 1 assist as the Blackhawks shut-out Montreal 2-0 at the Stadium

Nov. 26th, 1962
- The Beatles (with Ringo on drums) record "Please Please Me" at EMI/Abbey Road in London, to be their 1st UK #1 hit early in the new year
- New York smokes Detroit 5-0 at the Olympia, with both Andy Bathgate and Camille Henry having 3-point nights; Chicago smokes Boston 5-0 at the Garden, with Glenn Hall earning the shut-out

March 5th, 1963
- The Beatles record their second UK#1 hit, "From Me To You", at EMI/Abbey Road in London
- Montreal and Detroit face off at the Olympia. The Habs win 4-3, but Gordie Howe scores his 33rd goal. He would finish with 38 goals to lead the NHL and win the scoring title for the final time.

April 18th, 1963
- The Beatles appear at the Royal Albert Hall in London for the first time, playing 4 songs as part of a package appearance. Backstage, Paul McCartney meets Jane Asher, his future fiancee.
- Toronto defeats Detroit 3-1 to win the Stanley Cup.

Nov. 10th, 1963
- Beatles play the Hippodrome Theatre, Birmingham, UK
- Gordie Howe scores his 545th goal, in a 3-0 win over Montreal at the Olympia, to become the #1 goal scorer in NHL history (surpassing Maurice Richard).

(On Nov. 22nd, 1963, The Beatles' 2nd album -- With The Beatles -- is released in the UK, just hours before John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas.)

Feb. 9th, 1964
- Beatles play live on the Ed Sullivan show, in New York City, for the first time
- All six NHL teams are in action, but New York's Rangers are on the road, in Detroit, losing 4-2

May 5th, 1966
- George Harrison records guitar-solos for "I'm Only Sleeping" at EMI/Abbey Road (track appears later on Revolver).
- At the Olympia, Montreal beats Detroit 3-2 in overtime (winner: Henri Richard at 2:20) to take the Stanley Cup.

Nov. 9th, 1966
- John Lennon meets Yoko Ono for the first time
- The "over-the-hill" gang Maple Leafs beats the Habs at the Forum, 3-2, with Jim Pappin scoring the game-winner in the third (he had 7 game-winners that year to lead the NHL). Meanwhile, the Bruins tie the Rangers 3-3 at MSG; rookie Bobby Orr has 6 shots on goal and is +2, despite not picking up a point.

Jan. 30th 1969
- The Beatles play live on the Apple Corps. building rooftop at 3 Savile Row in London, for 42 minutes (filmed for the Let It Be film) in the afternoon. It's the last time they'll ever appear in public, live.
- Simultaneously, in North America, Chicago destroys Philadelphia 12-0 at The Spectrum in Philly. Jim Pappin has a hat-trick, Bobby Hull three assists, Dennis Hull 2 goals and 3 assists, and Pit Martin 1 goal and 5 assists (Denis DeJordy the shut-out). For Philly, Lacroix, Gendron, Sarrazin, Van Impe, and Miszuk all go -6 in the game. On the same night, The Bruins are in California to play the Kings, winning 7-5. Glen Sather has maybe the best game of his (modest) NHL career, scoring 1 goal and 2 assists and going +4. Derek Sanderson, however, scores a hat-trick and has 4 points.

(This was the best I could do... a lot of important Beatle-dates don't coincide with the NHL playing schedule!)

The Portland Trail Blazers and the Phoenix Suns play what is still the highest scoring game in NBA playoff history (153-151, double overtime) on the same night as game 4 of the Rangers/Penguins series in which Ron Francis changed series momentum with a goal from the blueline on Mike Richter (a game in which the Rangers had a 2 goal lead in the third period) en route to a hat trick in the game that swung momentum, but also was the first of Pittsburgh's 11 straight wins (and 14 straight overall, an all-time playoff record) that spring en route to the 1992 Stanley Cup.

In the other Wales playoff game on 5/9/1992, the Montreal Canadiens are swept in 4 games by the Boston Bruins for the first time since 1952 and the second time in franchise in what would be Pat Burns' last game as Habs coach and Boston's last second round series victory until 2011

I believe Rocket Richard passed away the day before Game 1 of the 2000 SC Finals, which allowed both teams to have a long moment of silence on the biggest stage.

Boom Boom Geoffrion passed away the morning that this number was to be retired in Montreal in a game against the Rangers. Unbelievably emotional scene with his family present.

December 28, 1981- on NFL Wild Card sunday, the NY Giants won their first playoff game since 1956 and the Buffalo Bills won their first playoff game as an NFL team (first playoff win for that franchise period since their AFL days in 1965).

Two days later on December 30:

There are teams, that play in the same garden as an NBA team. Were there in the history a game day, when both of them in the single day won their decisive playoff game? I cant imagine an title game, that probably never happen.

At Fenway Park, Roger Clemens sets a MLB record for strikeouts by fanning 20 Seattle Mariners in a 3-1 Red Sox win.

At the Montreal Forum, Claude Lemiuex scores in OT in Game 7 against Hartford to send Montreal to the Wales Conference Final.

Anniversary of the Most Lopsided Deal in NFL History - 5 Points Blue

The Herschel Walker trade, considered the NFL's most lopsided trade and one of the more lopsided trades in sports history, took place 3 days before Wayne Gretzky scored point #1851 to become hockey's all-time leading scorer

Common. That isnt anything special. You can also said, that this trade took place xy days before Dallas Stars won they Stanley Cup with Brett Hulls famous goal-no goal.
