I'm assuming this link Face-Off Locations applies to the NHL.

If a team on the PP in the attacking zone is penalized, is the faceoff then held in the neutral zone? In the link provided, part "(g)" suggests it should be in the penalized team's defending zone, however, I'm pretty sure part "(c)" applies, and it's held in the neutral zone. I'm trying to figure this out for a simulation game I'm playing.

Basically, it's 5 on 4, and the PP team has possession in the SH team's zone - an offensive player on the PP is assessed a 5 minute major. It's now 4 on 4; I'm assuming it's a neutral zone faceoff? I get if it would have been 5 on 5 before that 5 minute major was assessed, then the faceoff would now be in my defensive end. The wording is just getting me to overthink.

Thanks

For the situation that you describe you are looking in the wrong section.

You need to look here:

I must be missing something - that "Calling of Penalties" page indicates faceoffs via penalties, as occurring (for the most part) in the neutral zone - I thought if a team is penalized, rendering them shorthanded, the faceoff is always in the SH team's defensive end? I'm not even certain now. Lol.

I'm guessng it's not updated with the new NHL rule change? I'm pretty sure in the situation I describe in my original post, that the faceoff is held in the neutral zone. Just looking for 100% clarification on that, and now I'm wondering why that page describes faceoffs via penalties, as occurring in the neutral zone.

I think he’s pointing you to rule 409 (a):
  1. The stoppage occurred in the attacking zone of the team who committed the infraction – in which case the face- off will take place at the nearest neutral zone face-off spot.

Also, Rule 612 (c): When a stoppage of play occurs as the result of any action by the attacking team in the attacking zone, the ensuing face-off will take place at the nearest neutral zone face-off spot

I see exactly where he's pointing me to; I'm questioning what is stated on the website.

During what situations then is the faceoff held in the SH team's zone? I thought when a team goes down a man, the faceoff is held in the SH team's end - these rules suggest they are held in the neutral zone.

However, this is stated in the faceoff section: g) A team causing a stoppage of play shall not gain a territorial advantage with the ensuing face-off. In this instance, the ensuing face-off shall be at the nearest face-off spot closer to their own goal.

I must me missing something, because they seem to contradict each other.

I just realized the problem is in the first sentence of the OP.

The NHL uses different faceoff rules than USA Hockey. In the NHL, the faceoff automatically goes to the defensive zone after a penalty, no matter the manpower situation. In USA Hockey, it’s determined per Rule 409.
