Mike Rupp (610 NHL game career) likes what the Flames have done this offseason..

Fee like the roster is good and has depth, but that first line will be the death of us. Break them up and find something new that works. Let them play together on the power play with Tkachuk working his magic too.

As generic as that line-up was, it is mostly likely what we see opening night barring injuries. Ugh.

My unfounded belief is that Treliving is on the hunt for a top 6 RW more than anything and that Monahan's on the block.
It would line up with the idea of moving Lindholm to centre without sacrificing Bennett playing C or Ryan in general.

I don't buy it for a second. The idea is based on depth. Last year the 3rd line wasn't on pace to average under 25 points a piece. They weren't a threat. It allows teams to focus solely on shutting the Monahan line. In turn challenging the Flames to beat them as a one line team. Pushing Backlund down the line up moderately improves the 2nd line but gives the 3rd line a massive upgrade, especially if Dube takes the expected big step forward. Trading Monahan would just be rehashing the same flawed team design, possibly even downgrading it.

2022 Cup to Calgary
Last year the 3rd line wasn't ... a threat.

These were the 5-on-5 on-ice goals/60 for our top three centres last year, sorted by most goals per minute to fewest:

Regular season
Backlund - 2.99
Ryan - 2.28
Monahan - 2.27

Playoffs
Bennett - 3.18
Backlund - 2.11
Monahan - 1.29

Using Monahan as a proxy for the "first" line and Ryan/Bennett as the proxies for the so-called "third" line, the third line produced more goals for its icetime than the so-called "first" line.

They were absolutely a threat.

This team isn't lacking depth. It's not lacking talent either. It's simply choosing to shoot itself in the foot with its loyalty to Sean Monahan.

Isn't it kind of weird to go to "5v5 Goals/60" to look at the PK specialist who will play limited, but very effective 5v5 minutes, as well as the (stop me if you've heard THIS one before) 10 game sample size of someone scoring a lot and someone not scoring alot? Cause like, yeah when you f***ing take the 1st line C's worst season in recent history and sort by how many goals he's getting in his elevated role it's gonna look bad. Cant include last year when Monahan had a 3.9 EV GF/60 compared to 2.9 from Bennett, or the year before that when Monahan only was behind Lomberg (sample size warning) with a 3.7, while Bennett had 1.8. A year before that it's a bit closer with Monahan at a 2.7 with Bennett still resting at 1.8. So on and so forth. Is this a clear picture that

No. It isn't. This goes out to all the Bennett apologists: You cannot continually point to 10 games of the season where he shows up to define him as a 1C. Cool, he can get up for important games. That doesn't mean he has earned anything through the grind of a 82 game season where he continually fails to produce at anything beyond Excuses/60 for his lack of production. I love him and feel he has more in him but this "Monahan is trash" narrative needs to get out of here.
