How does this kid compare to his fellow countryman, Marat Khusnutdinov? Is he more of a goal scoring winger and Marat more of a play making, 2-way center? Who's the better skater or, etc.? Both seem to be big sleepers.

I agree both are big sleepers. Between the two of them Khusnutdinov has the better motor and is the better two-way player, and Ovchinnikov is probably flashier and a better puck-carrier.

In the last 3 drafts Colorado have been swinging for the fences with some high-risk, high-reward forwards, including picking 5 Russians in later rounds, so they might be players on some under-the-radar Russian guys like Ovchinnikov.

In 2019 the Avs were also reportedly targeting Alexandrov with the 63rd pick before he got selected 1 pick before at 62nd, suggesting that they haven't shied away from Russians despite Shvyrev and Smirnov not working out.

It's actually not a bad strategy as right now Russia is underscouted, holds a wealth of talent, all of that added to the fact that the russian goalie prospects are probably the best world-wide when it comes to positioning and technique. Askarov himself being a great prospect has as much to do with the goalie pipeline there being insanely good right now as it has to do with his own tremendous talent.

Miftakhov is pretty good as a prospect, and Arthur Akhtyamov has the potential to be a dark horse prospect that eventually goes on to be really good in the NHL.

Even though Colorado doesn't have a lot to show for these riskier selections, Nikolai Kovalenko shows some promise and could eventually be a fixture in the team's middle-6.

I totally agree. It makes sense in Colorado's current situation to go for some high upside players in the later rounds, and Russia being under-scouted is the best bet to unearth a hidden gem, especially in goal as you rightly pointed out.

Beyond Newhook/Bowers/Kaut, Kovalenko is probably our best chance of filling a bottom 6 role with an ELC. He looks to be progressing really well in the KHL.

The same can also be said of Zhuravlyov too. He's had a solid first season in the KHL as a 19 year old, including a very steady showing at the WJC as Romanov's defensive partner on Russia's blueline. It's still early to say definitively, but so far that's looking like a good late round pick.
