This should be interesting.
Wisconsin's incoming class is really underwhelming, and even that's being generous.

still wouldn't be surprised to see him go to the CHL
Really underwhelming? Compared to what? Last year's one of the best ever? You aren't being generous.. it's fine. There are a lot of guys who will be there for a few years and can be great college players

Its confirmed Cole Caufield is returning to Wisconsin for another year. Nice to year, I hope montreal makes the playoffs next year and Caufield comes over.

no way he goes to the OHL imo, it would be Wisconsin or Laval imo. But clearly he's taking the advice of the Habs management since they are the ones that wanted him to return to Wisconsin.

Good decision Cole. Go back out there, take the team on your back, be a leader, focus on the improvement you have to make and arrive in Montreal as a real NHL ready prospect. This is the best favor you can do to yourself with the tremendous mediatic and fan pressure.

This is good as he still needs to work on alot of things to be anything more than a middle 6 winger and PP specialist at this point.

Caufield a freshman led the entire conference in scoring on the worst team in the conference and yo call him a future middle 6 winger?? I know he needs to improve his defensive game and be more physical but middle 6 winger is still unfair.

His NCAA team look to be a mess and badly coached. I hope he goes to the CHL and play lot of games.
While I would kind of like that for Caufield, the last Hab I remember going from college hockey to the CHL was Louis Leblanc.
It's very different because Leblanc was a great student, being in Harvard... he should have stayed there longer. I agree that Caufield would need to play more games but being back in the NCAA with the same coaching, possibly with the Habs recommendations, should be fine. He'll be leaving camp early next season again, as I believe the NCAA season starts earlier than most leagues.

Plenty of talk of cancelling "on-campus" Fall Semester at schools. Just heard a Big 10 Athletic Director say that if students aren't on campus in the Fall, neither will student athletes. So, if there's no hockey at Wisconsin.... ???

If that ends up happening and this thing is lingering, the AHL won't be doing too hot either. Don't think we can say much definitively for another month or two

Has he signed yet w/ Montreal?

I believe if he goes back to school 1 more year he becomes a UFA

With the NHL schedule being pushed back for 2021/2022 I wonder if he just decides to stay in school

Anybody hear any news on him?

If I’m not mistaken I believe NCAA players have to play 4 years at school before they can choose not to sign with their drafting team and go right to free agency. So Caufield would have to stay in school for another 3 years.

NCAA sports is also an uncertainty, if not even less than pro sports for the 21-22 season.

Yeah, I can't see him not signing in Montreal if that's the case. I think Pro sports will continue next year, not sure about NCAA.. alot of players might opt out and sign with their clubs

I believe he'll sign at the end of next year, just like Poehling. He needs to stay in school for three more years to become UFA, doubt he is willing to stay there for that long considering the amount of money he'll be losing in the process.

He was going to return to Wisconsin for next season.

I say ‘was’ as this was decided prior to covid. Like everything else, things could be different now

I work in D1 college athletics and while we'll very likely operate next year in some capacity, its going to be significantly different in terms of sports medicine care, facility access, training, etc. Dorm life too is going to be drastically different as well. I wouldn't be surprised if more college players play elsewhere next year. Isles had Ishakov sign to play in the SHL next year. He claims its for financial reasons due to Covid-19, but I wouldn't be surprised if this played a role in it as well.
