Expectations of Yzerman's First Year

My only expectation regarding Yzerman is that many people on this forum will find a way to be disappointed with what he's doing and claim that Holland is still pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

Seriously though, I expect Yzerman to largely stay on the same course that Holland was on -- patient, building through the draft, stockpiling picks, etc. I do think Yzerman will be more aggressive on the trade front than Holland was. I will not be surprised if AA or Mantha is moved.

You joke in your first paragraph, but I am expecting that exact thing to happen, and much sooner than we expect or it should.

My expectations/predictions for his first year are:

1) Will trade at least one surprising player from the roster, that no one was expecting to be moved

2) Will sign smaller name UFA's for whatever holes we have/depth

3) Will bring in at least 2-3 TB scouts/personnel

4) Mostly minor trades if/any outside of my first prediction

5) Rasmussen will start in GR (only get call up if dominant in the AHL)

6) Zadina starts out of camp (gets sent down if he doesn't produce)

7) Cholowski and Hronek both up with DET - Both likely stay up

8) Svech with the big club all year, if not traded

I think we'll see roughly a lot of what we've been seeing from Holland. The Wings will make a push for one of the big UFA, but not the smaller fish. They'll try to move some ugly contracts if there is any kind of market to be made, and the Wings will continue to focus on drafting and developing.

What will be most telling is if Yzerman steps in and immediately starts moving some of the kids. at that point he's clearly saying the rebuild is essentially starting over, imo.

Maybe Steve can trade Trevor Daley to Tampa for their 2020 1st. (Not sure if they have their 2019)

Look, i'm a Wings fan and happy that Yzerman is the GM now but people really need to lower their expectations when it comes to Yzerman. He's not a wizard, he doesn't have some magic potion when it comes to trades or draft picks. The high expectations so many have for him, especially when it comes to ripping people off with trades, is just setting them up for being disappointed down the road IMO.

You're not wrong.

It might be fun to think Yzerman could flip dead weight, but it's highly unlikely that he can or will manage to do so. I'm quite excited to see Stevie back in Detroit, but that's just in a "planning for the future" sense. It's unlikely we're gonna skyrocket to the top of the standings this coming season. I don't see playoffs for us until at least 2020-2021, and even then, it's not an expectation of mine. It's my hope that we'll manage it, and that'll be a team effort for sure, not just 'cause we have our Captain back..

I'm not expecting miracles. I'm just happy we have a gm who isn't afraid to make bold trades.

I would just hope he somehow starts to have a plan in place to rid the team of the awful contracts of useless players, and somehow start to establish, either by the draft or free agency, a defensive core that will actually play defense, which has been needed since Nick retired.

They do have a plan for the contracts. Let them run their course.

Same reason the Wings skipped Z and D until later rounds. They liked them, had them pegged on the board, but were not going to blow draft capital on players they knew wouldn't be drafted early.

There's a difference between "I think Kucherov could be a great player and I'm willing to use a 2nd on him" and a Nostradamus-like "This kid is going to lead the NHL in scoring so I'm going to draft him way ahead of his scouting reports."

The second one isn't a realistic expectation. The Wings liked Datsyuk enough to take a chance on him. They didn't know he'd become a god damn legend.

See above.

this always drives me crazy

some people act like because the teams drafting guys like that didn't know exactly what they would become it's all luck and they don't deserve any credit

there's like an entire continent of middle ground there

But...... it's a complete false equivalency to compare pre fall of USSR draft picks vs now. Back then, you had real strong worries that a guy like Sergei Fedorov or Vladimir Konstantinov might not be allowed to come to America. They might want it with every fiber of their being, but if they were locked into military service, you had to do stuff like bribe a Russian official to say you were dying to get out of it.

even Fedorov literally had to sneak out of his hotel room at a tournament in Seattle and board a helicopter Illitch sent

Please let this be true!!!

What kind of knowledge could we expect about Russian hockey and Russian players in such a move?

No doubt Yzerman has found success drafting high impact Russians from his time in Tampa. I'm sure it could only help to bring a guy like Fedorov on board. But... How exactly? Like he knows which players plan on staying in the KHL or plan on making the jump? He'd be better at liaising with them to get them to come? Russian undrafted free agents?

In the end, it's money that doesn't impact the cap and I don't see how it could hurt. Do it. Retire the number. Don't most of the fans want that anyway? Bring on this nostalgia tour with Stevie and Sergei and hell get Ozzy in there and let's do this. Then let's get to work.

The way the hype sounded, I thought Yzerman would put on some Infinity Gauntlet made with his 4 Stanley Cup rings and use it to make Abdelkader and Ericsson turn to dust.

1. Revamp scouting and player development like someone else said in the other Stevie thread.

2. Try to shed as much of the dead weight as possible, meaning Helm, Abdelkader, Ericsson, Kronwall, Howard, and/or DDK.

3. Get some defensemen that don't suck.

4. Repeat #3 for the goalies.

5. Stop handing out NTCs/NMCs like Halloween candy.
Kronwall might be done and Ericsson and Howard have one more year. Like it or not DDK has a full NTC until January 1st 2021 therefore is going nowhere Helm can be moved as his NTC is voided come June 15 2019 good luck moving Abby.

Players what Yzerman's scouting Director Al Murray has drafted for two organizations:

2015
3rd round - F Anthony Cirelli, Scoring middle6 forward, 100 games, 50 points (0.50 ppg)
4th round - F Mathieu Joseph, Bottom6 forward, 70 games, 26 points (0.37 ppg)

2014
1st round - RD Anthony DeAngelo, offensive 3rd pair-defenceman, 132 games, 52 points (0.39 ppg) --> traded to Arizona for 2nd pick.
3rd round - C Brayden Point, Selke Trophy Center, 229 games, 198 points (0.86 ppg)

2013
1st round - F Jonathan Drouin, Top6 forward, with 1st line potential.
2nd round - W Adam Erne, 4th line forward

2012
1st round - G Andrei Vasilevskiy, Vezina goaltender
6th round - C Cedric Paquette, Bottom6 matchup center.

2011 -
1st round - C Vladislav Namestnikov, Middle6 center.
2nd round - RW Nikita Kucherov, Elite NHL superstar winger.
7th round - LW Ondrej Palat. Top6 defensive forward.

Works 3 years for Team Canada (with Yzerman).

2008 Los Angeles Kings
1st round - RD Drew Doughty, Norris Trophy defenceman
2nd round - RD Slava Voynov, Top2 defenceman.

2007
1st round, LD Thomas Hickey, 2nd-3rd pair defenceman, 449 games (currently injured and at Islanders)
2nd round - RW Wayne Simmonds, 2nd line, physical PP specialist
4th round - LD Alec Martinez, 2nd pair D

2006
1st round - G Jonathan Bernier, backup goaltender
1st round - F Trevor Lewis, 3rd line cheking forward

2005
1st round - C Anze Kopitar, Elite NHL superstar Center
3rd round - G Jonathan Quick, Vezina Trophy Goaltender

2003
1st round - W Dustin Brown, 1st line power-forward
1st round - C Brian Boyle, Bottom6 Center

So that's Murray's sample size for 10 years. Yzerman wasn't drafting for La Kings, before they become a winner. It was Al Murray, who drafted a Stanley Cup winner to LA and it is Al Murray who drafted that President's Trophy winner to Tampa.

This is the guy behind Yzerman's drafting talent and we should get him, just anyhow it ever is possible.

Dustin Brown - Anze Kopitar - Nikita Kucherov
Ondrej Palat - Brayden Point - Wayne Simmonds
Jonathan Drouin - Vlad Namestnikov - Anthony Cirelli
Trevor Lewis - Cedrid Paquette - Mathieu Joseph
Adam Erne - Brian Boyle

Alec Martinez - Drew Doughty
Thomas Hickey - Slava Voynov
(was one of the greatest 2nd defencemen in NHL, before beating his wife)
Tony Deangelo

G Andrei Vasilevskiy
G Jonathan Quick
G Jonathan Bernier

All from 10 latest drafts Murray has drafted players which are at NHL-age. If something is missing, are left-handed 3rd pair stay-at-home defencemen. The easiest player to buy from free market.

I could believe that only Boston's group of Directors could beat this Murray's record. So much Elite skill in short time period. And in two places. When same thing (a Contender) happens in two different places, you can heavily trust for that guy.

Al Murray - Director of Amateur Scouting

I expect Yzerman to be much more aggressive in all facets, but mostly with trades and signing players to good contracts. Kenny is super conservative and always plays the safe card, while I see Yzerman as a guy who isnt afraid to roll the dice once in a while.
