Given the present alignment there's not much question the league will expand by 2 more teams in the not too distant future. That being said Who would you protect?Out of the present roster. Im going to use the 2000 model for what players you are able to protect which is 1 goalie 5 defencemen and 9 forwards or 2 goalies 3 defencemen and 7 forwards. Personally Id go with the first option. Thus I would protect:

Turris
Macarthur
Ryan
Spezza
Zibby
Smith
Conacher
Neil
Stone

Karlson
Cowen
Methot
Ceci
Gryba

Lehner

What about yall??

*Edit had Condra switched for Stone.

I think only the top 24 players in the teams depth chart for the previous season are eligable of course this is minus the players you protect.

What no takers?

You've opened the thread for 10 minutes, no need for a triple post. Also, if you used the search button, we had the exact same thread about a month or 2 ago

Would protect Condra instead of Stone and Weircioch instead of Gryba.

I'm pretty sure Batman recently said that they had no plans for expansion.
The other possibility is some eastern team like Florida could move to a western city.

No immediate plans, when it happens it'll be a turn on the dime decision like in Winnipeg. Bob Mac's been floating Seattle and Las Vagas as options - definitely interesting.

well something has to happen keeping the league aligned this way is at least in theory unfair to the teams in the east I think.

Also why there is not a team in Las Vegas is completely baffling to me....it would sell out every game even if they sucked...

The only change I'd make is Michalek in for Stone. It would hurt to lose Wiercioch so I imagine someone might be traded to prevent that.

Unless they resign 9MM before seasons end there's no point in protecting him. He's UFA and I'm pretty sure you can't draft a player not under contract with UFA status.

I'd re-sign Michalek. I like him more than most.

Off topic but I was just looking at Capgeek and good God do we ever have Turris signed to a sweet deal until 2018. Three and a half million a year for the production he's giving us is fantastic. I have to give Murray kudos for that one.

Great deal but Murray made up for it with 2.6 for Greening.

There isn't a great season ticket base...

This is a joke right? the casinos and hotels could/would buy them up like mad for prizes give aways and for there staff and guests..to be honest they'd probably sell 12000 season tickets faster then any other team in the league. Or at least faster then half the teams in the league. Not to mention the fact that the team could add to its revenue stream by having a casino attached to the stadium and a hotel. And also consider the tourist flow I have no doubt that they could half fill the building on walk ins alone on a fairly regular basis.

I'd do the same but switch Gryba with Wiercioch as an untouchable.

I don't think a Vegas Casino would necessarily care about season tickets for an NHL team. It's possible, but I'm not sold on the market.

And does the NHL actually want that kind of close affiliation with the biggest gambling market on the continent? Do we want professional players living in a community where virtually the entire economy revolves around gambling?

That's a recipe for disaster.

Is whats being suggested here that you have concerns that a Vegas based team might be bullied into throwing games and such? Sorry but I don't see that happening. I do see the risk for players placing bets on themselves to win.... but betting on themselves to lose and then throwing a game.... the only player capable of doing that is the goalie....Not to mention there are bookies and even telephones in every major city that would allow you to get in contact with the neccissary people to place such a bet so I really don't see that as being a new temptation to the players they couldn't deal with.

It's not just betting. It's everything revolving the industry.

Telling your cashier at the supermarket a flu is going around the team ("why are you buying so much chicken?" "oh, don't want to catch that flu going around, ha ha"), talking about a player who may be unhappy, any kind of "inner" happening with the team...

Everyone in Vegas is connected to the industry in one way or another. Talking to anyone outside the team - even about stupid little things - can end up a nightmare. The smallest thing that can influence the bets/odds or gets any involvement from pro gamblers, organized crime, etc. can lead to trouble. Just being that close to the hive of gambling will make for a huge ripple effect.

That's why in the summer orientation across the league (and all pro sports league) they have numerous lectures with the guys and show then how the most innocent conversations and connections can lead a player down the wrong path. Being in Vegas, you'd practically have to be in quarantine the whole season to avoid it.

Not worth the risk to the league to have a team there. Of course, knowing how money hungry and short-sighted this league is, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen.

Okay I'll throw out another hypothetical list for everyone.

Spezza
Turris
Ryan
MacArthur
Zibanejad
Conacher
Smith
Stone
Condra

Karlsson
Ceci
Methot
Cowen
Wiercioch

Lehner

Noteable exclusions:

- Michalek: He is a UFA this year and I expect him to test the market. That being said if he is resigned then he is likely protected.

- Neil: Good heart and soul guy, but the underlying possession numbers have been terrible this year. He is an anchor on his line, we could afford to lose him.

-Phillips: Part of the leadership of the team, but our more important pieces need to be protected for the future of the organization

-Corvo: Nah, just kidding :P
