Probably won't be much desirable from the Devils. My best guess at our protection list:

F(7): Hischier-Zacha-Bratt-Sharangovich-Wood-Kuokkanen-McLeod
D(3): Severson-Subban-Siegenthaler?
G(1): Blackwood
Exempt: Hughes-Boqvist-Maltsev-Smith
UFA: Murray-Carrick-Dell-Wedgewood
Available: Bastian-Johnsson-Merkley-Butcher +other AHL fodder

---------------

Nate Bastian - He's been a perfectly acceptable 4th line RW. Big body, throws his weight around, but not a ton of offense.

Andreas Johnsson - Scored 20 goals for Toronto a couple seasons ago but was a non-factor for us this season.

Nick Merkley - Cleared waivers, might be a AAAA player at this point. Productive in the AHL, but not quite skilled enough to hold down a permanent NHL gig.

Will Butcher - Found himself a healthy scratch most of this season, but has put up some offense (9 points in 19 games) with Subban sidelined. Put up 44 points a few seasons ago, but is a below average skater so he'd probably need to be in a particular 3rd pairing / PP specialist niche. One year left on his contract (3.733 mil cap hit, 4.1 mil salary), so could see Seattle passing on that.

Ryan Murray - Impending UFA, but perhaps Seattle would rather try to talk him into bypassing free agency than take anybody else from New Jersey. Murray played his junior hockey in Everett, so he'd have some loose ties to the area. Turns 28 in a few months, so he's still in his theoretical prime. Depending on his price tag, I wouldn't mind the Devils re-signing him but haven't heard any news on that front.

My list was similar but would replace Bratt with Bastian and Severson with Murray.

Devils would only lose one of the two.

Think there are plenty of candidates that could replace Bratt in the pipeline and for the salary he receives Severson is simply not consistent enough defensively.

A quintet of Murray, Subban, Bahl, Smith and Siegenthaler is a good start and a targeted addition or one of the other young prospects would be stronger than what the Devils had most of this season.

Has Francis tipped his hand to whether he feels the team can be competitive out of the gate like Vegas?

Was ther ea need to be condescending and include the highlighted?

Wasn't meant to be a taking a shot at you or something.

BTW: To answer another part of your question.
Comparing it to Vegas makes no sense.
Even Vegas didn't know they'd be anywhere near as successful as they've become and teams had way more time to structure their contracts.

I also could see us going younger given the way the unprotected lists most likely will look like.

We all know Seattle has no players yet, didn't really need to be stated.

I think younger is the way to go. I'm not sure we're going to see the kind of monumental f*** up like the Panthers giving away Marchessault & Reilly, or the Ducks giving away Theodore to rid themselves of Stoner, or Tuch and Haula to protect Dumba.

I think we re going to see a couple vets with little term left taken with decent cap hits that Seattle can gain assets with at the deadline. Giordano as we previously discussed.

Kinda condescending to assume that isn't it? After all, comparing to Vegas' timeline, it would have been a very real possibility that Seattle could have signed a couple free agents by now. There was absolutely nothing wrong with RainyCityHockey's post, unless you're intentionally looking for reasons to be offended.

If them and I have a misunderstanding, why is it up to you and others to interfere? I explained why I thought it was condescending, then I moved on. Maybe you should too.

If you didn't want any "interference" then perhaps you should have sent him a dm instead of crying about it on a public discussion forum. Instead you tried to call him out to make him look bad or feel bad or whatever reason you felt the need to publicly show your butt hurt, so yeah I chimed in to make sure you know that you're the one being the jerk here.

Actually you're the only one being a jerk, saying something to someone for a perceived slight isn't crying, he said that wasn't his intention, I said why I thought it was and moved on. Then here you come riding in with your tinfoil armor and now you're insulting me.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be some kind of a mix but will probably end up on the younger side given the way teams have been able to structure their rosters(thanks to having 2 1/2 years of time instead of just one year with Vegas) and with us going pretty heavy on the analytics side of things.

What I don't fully agree with is us taking guys to flip them at the deadline, like Giordano.
I think those higher cap hits will most likely be for players of teams that are willing to do a side deal with us.

Also, I'm not fully expecting it, but I wouldn't count too much on GM's being completely rational, having learned their lesson and none of them panicking, because a certain number of them are usually doing something stupid anyways.

BTW: What do you think about the way the team wants to hold the expansion draft, like I've posted on the previous page?

Here's how the NHL and Kraken plan to showcase the expansion draft

- the team wants to hold it outside with with two stages and seating areas for fans.
- they want to have five to ten locations in Seattle including Space Needle, Pike Place Market etc and the market including Oregon and Alaska.
- wants it to be breadcasted on TV(ROOT, National TV and Local TV stations) and via stream while switching in between locations
- broadcast is supposed to last between 60 to 90 minutes
- Ron Francis would be in main set announcing (most)expansion draft picks
- additionally local figures and celebrities would also announced picks or trades
- music acts are also said to be included
- the main location has been chosen, but still in talks with city/authorities, but won't be Seattle center
- the NHL hopes to fly about five players to Seattle to be in town while being picked

Looking forward to the Oregon location.

I think it sounds like it could be a great event, that would be so much better under different circumstances. Bruckheimer's connections could really lead to a level of entertainment the NHL has never had access to before too. But, I've never actually been to Seattle, so most of the places mentioned are just places I've heard of and seen pics of before. I do love the inclusion of Oregon, that is just smart.

I do know I'll be watching for sure.

I hope there are a lot of Scouts watching Jonathan Dahlen from Timra against Bjorkloven. Going into the 3rd period Dahlen has a goal and an assist

Dahlen is the player I had ticketed from the San Jose Sharks to the Expansion Seattle Kraken from the very start of the year and even before

Josh Leivo could be an interesting target, he looked good in Calgary, took a little to get going after a long time off due to being injured before the covid shutdown and not being healthy for the return to play, then he was looking good but never really got a chance to play with consistent linemates and didn't seem to have much luck.
Kylington from the Flames, players like Leivo are a dime a dozen

Younger is the way to go sprinkled in with a few vets

Is a Portland "Rosebuds" Expansion team far behind?
Doubtful with the WHL Winterhawks here. Portland is trying to get an MLB team. I don't think there is enough support for pro hockey with the NBA and MLS here already. I've only been here two years though, so I may be wrong. Seems Seattle already has the Oregon footprint too.

I hope to be able to attend the expansion draft at one of these sites

Looks like all major local venues should be available for this since Mariners & Sounders are both out of town that week. Something like T-Mobile Park & Seattle Center (Memorial Stadium?) as the main 2 sites and then small groups at Pike Place, Mt Rainier, Snoqualmie Falls, Alki Beach, Gasworks Park, Grand Coulee Dam, etc

Yeah, sadly I think the proverbial ship has sailed for a NHL team in Portland. The best we can hope for is a preseason exhibition game played at the Moda Center to drum up regional enthusiasm. PDX is a low-key hockey town (I see tons of NHL team gear all over) so it’d be a slam dunk opportunity for regional engagement.

I think the best chance Portland had was when the Coyotes were in the thick of their arena problems and were trying to sell. Paul Allen considered buying them, but it didn't happen.

I do think NHL would be successful in Portland, but I don't think that happens any time soon, largely because of the Kraken. If somebody out west were to move, I'd imagine Portland would be near the tip top of the list.

If they do Deception Pass I may just show up. That being said, I am still trying to steer away from crowded places.
