Yes who wouldn't want to clear 13 millions in cap space, amirite

Aren't you one of the posters who wept bitter tears the last couple years because we didn't spend to the cap? What glorious UFAs should we be overpaying to make sure we spend that cap space? You dump Weber and Drouin at the ED in the hopes of signing Hamilton and Landeskog, them are forced to scramble and sign Marc Staal and Nick Foligno when both guys go other places?

You open cap space with a plan in place, not a wish.

Is it possible we go 4-4?

KK
Anderson
Toffoli
Gallagher

Weber
Petry
Eddy
Chiarot/fleury

If they take drouin we use his money bring back Tatar who supposedly wants to resign.

This is what we should do. Then try to convince them to take Drouin.

Drouin allows the Habs to sign Tatar.

To sign Danault, or any other 3rd line C, you have to either trade away Weber or one of Chiarot, Edmundson, Byron.

So we need to move Drouin (5.5) and Weber (7.9) to free up space for Tatar and Danault's raises? Considering they already made a combined 7.9, that would leave 21.3 for the two of them. I can tell you're grasping for straws when the #1 Danault hater on the board is saying that Danault and Tatar should be making more than Toews and Kane...

Weber could be appealing to the Kraken. His cap hit is $7.85M but actual paid out will be $6M for 2021/22. Then it drops to $3M for 2022/23. A lot depends on how Francis wants to build the team. If he chooses the Vegas model, I think Chairot or Drouin would make the most sense. If he chooses to go the economical way and build through drafting and development then Weber would make the most sense as he would bring them up to meet the cap floor requirements.

I think the real trade deadline will occur before the expansion draft when lots of deals will be made in advance. With Montreal having so many UFA and draft picks, Bergie or the next GM should be able to make deals to help the team.

I gave Bergevin the pass for not getting real defense help at the deadline. I won't give him the pass with Minnesota, Colorado, and Nashvilles situation of having 4 good dmen they need to protect. Hopefully Bergevin isn't even here by then, but I'm assuming he is because Molson is an idiot.

Kotkaniemi also is getting a raise and Gallagher is worth 3 millions more.

HFHabs Galaxy brains: OMG, why does BaRgAiN bIn always acquire so many cheap depth players at the bottom of the lineup by trade and free agency, those are useless!?! :whine:

Also HFHabs Galaxy brains: we should expose Price, Weber, and Drouin. We can just replace our 1G, top 4D, and top 6F at the top of the lineup with cheap players through trade and free agency!!

Weber at 7.9 for another 5 years is absolutely atrocious. Very bad investment of money for the return. It's simply a no brainer to expose him or try to move him. Like you say, a 4D should not be paid 7.9M in any case and a 4D is quite available on the market.

Weber could be traded. It's Drouin you wanna expose.
Why would we expose Drouin? that is horrible asset management just trade him, regardless of is production or if he is they odd man out (TB got a pretty good return for him instead of exposing him) we won’t be has lucky but there are still team out there just looking for warm bodies 5.5M$ for 2 years.. .pretty sure it easier to expose Weber who contract is a lot worst and probably have more negative value vs. Drouin

And Alzners buyout drops by 2M and Allen makes 1.5M less. As well as losing a guy to the ED and Armia coming off the books.

It’s not like the Habs have a lot of cap space next season. Right now they have 15 regular players signed at ~ $66 million. So they have roughly $15.5 million to sign 7-8 players including KK. The next season they have 10 players currently signed at $57 million. So they have $25 million or so to sign 12-13 players including Suzuki and Romanov.

Having cap space, especially in a flat cap, is very valuable and in turn players like Drouin, Byron, and Weber who don’t live up to their big contracts really hurt a franchise.

Of course bringing in players on ELC’s like Caufield help that situation but a team can’t fill a roster with a bunch of players on ELC’s.

The expansion draft is likely our best window to be able to dump Price and Weber with Seattle either taking them or facilitating a trade since the $ start to go down it would help reach the floor with our spending as much money.

It will probably be the only window for us to get rid of that godaweful contract MB gave to Price.

I just can't believe people are fine with 10.5M$ for an average goalie until 2026.

The only way Price goes is if he agrees to it. Maybe he might wanna go as it's closer to BC and it's in Washington state where his wife is from. But if Habs were to strike a deal with Seattle, it's probably gonna be Byron included not Price.

Yes, Price can only go where Price wants to. But if you stress to him , that Colorado has Rodeos, Country music, and Rocky Mtns, just like BC. And there is a history of Hab goalies going to Avs and having much success. Maybe we can do it again. And maybe get their 1st.
We then sign someone Allen like for 4m or so and hope Primeau will be ready in a year or two.
It's not about signing FAs only. Teams may have to trade valuable assets to manage cap space.
So then you offer to leave Weber unprotected if Kracken take Drouin off our hands. Might have to sweeten that pot. Maybe only a second.
Then you'd have gained close to 20m, but need to replace the TOI of Weber and Drouin.

This is an easy response.

Why expose Drouin? Because he's the worst contract on the team. He has 0 trade value because he's a bad hockey player on a bad contract. We shopped him multiple times and no one wants him.

Weber can be traded. Not only is his reputation practically untarnished around the league but he's a right handed defenseman with a whole lot more intangibles that GMs value still. In addition his actual salary will be a lot lower than his cap hit meaning that a team like Ottawa can add a player like Weber and reach the cap floor without having to pay that much in actual dollars.

We would be so lucky if Seattle claimed Drouin.

When was Drouin shopped? :dunno:
