Protect Eddy over Chiarot
Leave Mete unprotected
Leave Byron unprotected
resign Armia Tatar Danault after expansion
I think Allen or Mete or Byron will be drafted.
1. Absolutely not.
2. I mean, yes, I see no reason to not protect Weber/Petry and will likely be Chiarot or Fleury.
3. No brainer.
4. No brainer.
So who are people thinking we expose at forward? We need two forwards exposed that have a 2021/22 contract and played at least 27 NHL games this year or 54 NHL games the last two years combined. Byron is 3 games away and seems pretty much a lock to be one of the ones exposed, but who is the other? We either need to expose someone like Evans or else re-sign Perry or Frolik to expose them. Knowing MB though he'll probably acquire a depth forward for the stretch run, so as long as that guy has year left on his deal we'll be fine. I wonder if teams will be more likely to hold on to qualifying depth forwards though so they can expose them themselves.
If Seattles picks Chariot in the expansion draft, it could open up a spot for Guhle next season
Romanov - Weber
Edmundson - Petry
The last spot should be a battle between Mete, Kulak, Guhle, and Harris assuming we don't sign any free agent.
You don't protect Weber, plain & simple, cuz there's no freakin' way Seattle takes him; you protect Petry, Mr. Ed, and Ekholm (or whoever he gets)...and if, for some monumentally boneheaded reason, Seattle does take Weber, you open up almost $8 mill in cap space to sign a better replacement...there's no upside to protecting Weber and no downside leaving him unprotected...
Even if they have to protect Weber.. Are we really that scared of losing Edmundson ? He's a bottom pair D, christ.
He's been better than Weber this year and is a good partner for Petry; you protect Mr. Ed...leave Weber unprotected...it's not Rocket Appliance, Ricky...
Are you serious ? I like Eddy and I was one of his defender this offseason but you don't protect Eddy before Weber...
Seattle won't take him, so why protect him??...and if they do, then it's almost $8 mill off the cap to pick up a better Top 4 RHD...protecting Weber isn't just unnecessary, it's a dumb move...
First off, why would Seattle take an $8 mill former Norris-calibre guy who's literally on his last legs and declining at an alarming rate when the Habs have to leave Allen unprotected??...second, take a look at the Dmen available this offseason and tell me that the $8 mill they'd save wouldn't be better spent on one of them if Seattle were stupid enough to take Weber...it makes the most sense in both hockey and business sense for the Habs to leave Weber unprotected...the only thing the Habs would miss if Weber was gone would be:
In the D available a lot will resign with there team and there is no garante that any of those will want to sign
I don't think MB even has the guts to not protect Weber
absolutely true... so hopefully he's turfed before that decision gets made.
don't think it would be stupid for them...
in real dollars, it's 1 year @6M (weber would be worth that on-ice next year), then 3, then [email protected] all while bumping up their cap.
He's got the veteran/leadership pedigree a lot of GM's covet, could see Francis wanting to have that precense on his roster as they get going.
Gives their new fanbase an instant "star" player to sell jerseys with.
Gives them a potential trade asset if the Preds come lurking to try and avoid a recapture scenario
if it weren't for our messed up cap situation, i'd be fully against moving him, he's still got value... but in our case, that cap space is much better utilized eslewhere.
Well, let's hope Seattle agrees with you, cuz it would be a great start to the offseason to have Weber's cap hit gone...
With recent moves and team performances what has changed?
Merrill and Gustafsson are both UFAs. We don't have to worry about them for the expansion draft. And Mete is gone
It's still a bit of a puzzle on defense. Weber and Petry should be protected, of course, but what about the 3rd man? Edmundson, Kulak and Chiarot could have the spot, but a youngster like Cale Fleury could be worth protecting.
Up front there's Tatar, Armia and Danault as UFAs. Lehkonen is playing himself off from protection. So you're left with Drouin-KK-Anderson-Gallagher-Toffoli-Evans. There is a 7th spot available. I'm thinking it could go to Tatar or Danault if they re-sign before the draft.
Available would be:
3 of Edmundson/Chiarot/Kulak/Fleury
Bergevin has a lot of leeway. Some teams have extra bodies. It feels like Bergevin could acquire either a forward or a dman that would be an upgrade for our team. He has an open spot up front, maybe 2 if Evans goes unprotected. On defense, we have extra depth anyway, so losing one of Edmundson/Chiarot/Kulak is not a big deal.
A trade prior to the expansion draft could be cheaper than usual, since teams stand to lose a player for nothing.
The only thing that sucks is possibly losing Allen
Looking forward to paying to protect Chiarot and losing Lehkonen anyway.
7 forwards: Anderson, Toffoli, Kotkaniemi, Drouin, Lehkonen, Gallagher, Evans
3 D: Weber, Petry, Edmundson
1 G: Price
Seattle likely picks between Chariot and Allen
Leave Drouin unprotected
leave Weber and Drouin unprotected... either getting off of the books would leave us better off this summer/next season as far as building towards contending in 2-3 years. Will be some solid players available for cheap to teams with cap space come the summer... quite a few owners will be pushing for saving $/cutting salary
No one in their right mind would protect DRouin!
Protecting Evans feels really weird
Looking like there will be lots of holes to fill next year. Tatar, Danault, Armia, Perry and Staal walk. Have a feeling Bozovin will try to retain some but will ultimately fail.
I would unprotect Weber, Drouin and Byron. That will leave your LW completely thing. The addition of Caufield will likely place Toffoli on the left. Lek gets waived because BozoBin can't even get a 7th for him.
With Mete gone and Merrill/Gustafson likely brought in as rentals, you protect Petry, Romanov and one of Chiarot/Edmundson.
Hopefully, you can send Seattle à pick, so they can pick Weber, Drouin or Byron.
In the end, your third and fourth lines are depleted, your D is back to 2016, your C hasn't been upgraded and your LW is in a state of dévastation. The legacy of BargainBin. Molson doesn't care, so why should we?
Perfect opportunity to begin a proper and lengthy rebuild with a new GM.
Romanov doesn't have to be protected. We can protect Petry, Edmundson, and one of Chiarot or Merrill (if he's better than Chiarot we re-sign him).
We can protect/or have exempt all of the following players:
Tatar Danault Gallagher
Toffoli Kotkaniemi Caufield
Anderson Suzuki Evans
Separate names with a comma.
