Protect Eddy over Chiarot
[*]Leave Mete unprotected
[*]Protect Evans
[*]Leave Byron unprotected
[*]resign Armia Tatar Danault after expansion
I think Allen or Mete or Byron will be drafted.
- other teams won’t give up a difference maker for Byron or lehkonen. They aren’t magic beans.
- MB could add a first, but who would be worth a first AND have a similar cap got to the aforementioned habs?? Who is this very affordable difference maker?
- if they are going to spend quality assets to bring in a LD that isn’t a rental, then they’ll risk losing him or big Ed in the expansion draft. Something to consider.
he’ll probably bring in a 4th line center. Evans isn’t getting a ton of ice time. Eric Staal, perhaps.
Even if they have to protect Weber.. Are we really that scared of losing Edmundson ? He's a bottom pair D, christ. You don't protect Weber, plain & simple, cuz there's no freakin' way Seattle takes him; you protect Petry, Mr. Ed, and Ekholm (or whoever he gets)...and if, for some monumentally boneheaded reason, Seattle does take Weber, you open up almost $8 mill in cap space to sign a better replacement...there's no upside to protecting Weber and no downside not protecting him...

Are you serious ? I like Eddy and I was one of his defender this offseason but you don't protect Eddy before Weber...
They probably would take him, perfect leader to start your franchise. And you really think it's easy to replace him by an other player ? I mean it's been how many year that they try to acquired a Dman ? and the best they got where Chiarot/Edmundson
First off, why would Seattle take an $8 mill former Norris-calibre guy who's literally on his last legs and declining at an alarming rate when the Habs have to leave Allen unprotected??...second, take a look at the Dmen available this offseason and tell me that the $8 mill they'd save wouldn't be better spent on one of them if Seattle were stupid enough to take Weber...it makes the most sense in both hockey and business sense for the Habs to leave Weber unprotected...the only thing the Habs would miss if Weber was gone would be:
THE STARE!!

I don't think MB even has the guts to not protect Weber

absolutely true... so hopefully he's turfed before that decision gets made.
don't think it would be stupid for them...
in real dollars, it's 1 year @6M (weber would be worth that on-ice next year), then 3, then 3@1M... all while bumping up their cap.
He's got the veteran/leadership pedigree a lot of GM's covet, could see Francis wanting to have that precense on his roster as they get going.
Gives their new fanbase an instant "star" player to sell jerseys with.
Gives them a potential trade asset if the Preds come lurking to try and avoid a recapture scenario
if it weren't for our messed up cap situation, i'd be fully against moving him, he's still got value... but in our case, that cap space is much better utilized eslewhere.
7 forwards: Anderson, Toffoli, Kotkaniemi, Drouin, Lehkonen, Gallagher, Evans
3 D: Weber, Petry, Edmundson
1 G: Price
Seattle likely picks between Chariot and Allen
Looking like there will be lots of holes to fill next year. Tatar, Danault, Armia, Perry and Staal walk. Have a feeling Bozovin will try to retain some but will ultimately fail.
I would unprotect Weber, Drouin and Byron. That will leave your LW completely thing. The addition of Caufield will likely place Toffoli on the left. Lek gets waived because BozoBin can't even get a 7th for him.
With Mete gone and Merrill/Gustafson likely brought in as rentals, you protect Petry, Romanov and one of Chiarot/Edmundson.
Hopefully, you can send Seattle à pick, so they can pick Weber, Drouin or Byron.
In the end, your third and fourth lines are depleted, your D is back to 2016, your C hasn't been upgraded and your LW is in a state of dévastation. The legacy of BargainBin. Molson doesn't care, so why should we?
Perfect opportunity to begin a proper and lengthy rebuild with a new GM.
