Hmm, that strikes a... nerve. Once had to take someone to a hospital, dude was almost passing out from pain -- turned out he had a pinched nerve. Recovered pretty quickly, but never rowed a trireme again.

A pinched nerve

Blegh, those suck. I had one in my upper back/lower neck once and it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life. I couldn't lean my neck back at all, make any really sudden movements, or move it much side to side for a week or so. Otherwise I would get this intense stabbing pain in that area and it would radiate all the way down my chest and arms. I'd never experienced anything like it. That went away after a week with a steroid pack and some muscle relaxers, but the residual mild/moderate local pain and discomfort probably lasted a solid 1-2 years and required physical therapy.
