Historic moment in the Quebec Midget AAA Friday night September 14,2018. Eve Gascon, goalie, started her first game. First female to play in the QMAAA.

Significant since Eve a 15 year old, made the team in training camp. First female to make an elite team that is part of the NHL feeder system in Canada.

Manon Rheaume played in the Q more than 25 years ago when depth goals turned down the Draveurs for a variety of reasons from schooling to exposure.

That's great! It looks like she's one of the youngest players on the team too.

I watched a Canadian university women's game last season, and was very impressed by the quality of play. There has been a huge increase in the number of girls playing minor hockey in the past 10 to 20 years. The results are evident.

So, is she the first female ever to play Midget AAA in Canada?

P.S. I was looking at the roster of Eve's Midget AAA team, and noticed a 12-year-old boy, Raphael Clermont, listed....do you know if this is a mistake?

Always great to hear things like this. Doubt we ever see a female play in the NHL but no reason a female can't play in a lesser league.

First to make an elite Midget AAA teamout of training camp.

Raphael Clermont is an "old" 16 year old, January 2, 2002 birthdate.

She's doing quite well at the Olympiques camp. They have their veteran goaltenders already locked in but it's nice to see that she can play among boys who are the same age and do well. Gascon committed to Minnesota Duluth for 2023.

On another subject, it's ironic how men and women have different rules in NCAA hockey. Women are allowed to play pro hockey before playing in the NCAA but men can't stay more than 48 hours or play in a preseason game in the CHL without losing their eligibility. It was never about amateurs not playing with pros but more about making sure players don't have enough time to change their mind.

She was pretty impressive in the inter-team game and making 19/20 saves in a preseason game (~30 minutes played) is also pretty good too. She's doing exactly what you want to see a future Szabados/St-Pierre do. Have to say it's really weird that they say Gascon is committed for 2023 when she'll be playing there in 2022. Gave me a bit of panic they were going to make her wait two seasons rather than just one.

But yeah very much agree with you. They could easily have the same rules for men and women. The only reason they don't put the pressure on the women is that opportunities are already so small for them that forcing them to play in inferior leagues could hurt their development before joining the NCAA. Sophie Shirley played in the CWHL before going to Wisconsin for example getting to play with some former NCAA stars and high end players. She didn't get a paycheck so she kept the eligibility & got a good amount of development out of it. Men's hockey at least has the BCHL, USHL, CJHL to stay in so NCAA teams don't have to worry about their prospects getting quality ice time and can therefore force them into making that decision.
