Yup, that’s the golden rule that no sports leagues allow breaking. They’re going to have to do a in-depth investigation of that.

I don’t think anyone would be shocked given his documented gambling issues. Hope this turns out to be false for Kane’s sake.

Wouldn't be surprised. He's known to be a high roller at the Casinos. He was accused of trying to stiff one for 100K. If the Casinos fully cooperate it won't turn out well. Then again they might want to keep their cash cow.

We will wait for NHL to conduct it's investigation.

Meanwhile if (big if at the moment) she does hold evidence, would you not want to use it during divorce settlement to negotiate a nice pay in exchange for keeping silent? As broke as Kane may be, there can be contingencies if he is unable to pay.

She just shot herself in the foot, if this results in him losing his NHL contract she's unlikely to get much of anything.

Paywall. Suggests Sharks could buy out contract. (But given dead cap space under flat cap, that probably not the option the Sharks pursue. However, a number of players on the team want him gone.)

Also menriosn EVP of security Maples is in charge of investigation. And he's on leave from HDA as board member

Buying him out doesn't make any sense at all, would just make their situation after 2025 even more dire.

If proven innocent and the Sharks buy him out to get rid of the distraction, what team does he land on?

Don’t see a buyout making financial or legal sense at this time. So the question is whether it’s worth doing for PR value?

Imo San Jose is better off letting the whole Kane fiasco develop and reassess what to do as it evolves.

The reason to buy out would not be because of the alleged betting, but locker room issues. (A number of players have requested his removal from the team.)

If the betting allegations are true, the league and/or team could end up terminating contract for cause (without the cap hit of a buy out). (IIRC, this ended up being what happened to the NFL player who bet on games.)

He's definitely a lightning rod for criticism.

Teams don't spend $20m+ to buyout their leading Goal and Points scorer because the rest of the locker room hates him.

If San Jose were to pursue a buyout it's for the PR image to get rid of Kane quickly.

Is a buyout even necessary? Why not just bide their time and wait for the league to make a decision? If Kane is found guilty of this then I'd have to imagine a lifetime ban is on the table, and I don't think his cap hit would count on the Sharks' books in that case. If the team buys him out before the league issues a judgment, and he's found not guilty, then that could be bad PR in itself.

I would expect that the standard of evidence here would be higher than an estranged wife's bitter social media posts.

And apart from some kind of a criminal investigation, I don't see how the NHL could compel the bookies to give up their secrets, assuming they could even find these bookies.

On the other hand, if Kane was stupid enough to bet using legal means then he could be in a ton of trouble. But that isn't the allegation here.

As for the ex, I assume that she will wisen up to the fact that having Kane banned from the NHL is not in her best interests. His further employment in the NHL is her only hope for financial stability in the future for her and the kids.

Kane has said he'd cooperate with NHL investigation. And that would include allowing NHL to look at his financial accounts.

#1 rule in something like this is "follow the money". My guess is forensic accountants will be going over all transactions with a fine tooth comb. All cash transactions may be suspect, especially without receipts.

That, more than anything, makes me question this.

Why would he agree to cooperate if there was some kind of smoking gun?

No doubt there is plenty of stupidity to go around but by all appearances he's receiving professional advice.

Unlike the estranged wife.
