Someone made a good point with the Bruins young Dman coming in and having a good mentor in Chara. We never had that luxury here in Edmonton. If Pronger had of stayed, we would probably have had a good stable of Dman to come up thru the ranks.
The year we took Drai at 3rd, Ekblad went 1st overall. He was even granted early exemption to play junior. I’m not saying he has been a bust in Florida, but if they could do draft over, where would Ekblad go? He didn’t have a Chara to play with. He had Brian Campbell , Kulikov and Willie Mitchell. No offence to them , but they are no Chara

Sekera would have been an excellent mentor. He made Benning look pretty good when they played together.

No good when injured though. We needed money off cap going forward so Sekera was our only piece. I have faith in HOLLAND. He is doing things right. Chiarelli made a complete mess

Ah... Buyouts do the opposite of what you said. The only year it "might" help is potentially next year.

He did absolutely nothing of note this year that required the buyout. Next year maybe it helps us. Don't hold your breath tho. And for the following 2 years after that it's sucks donkey dong and hurts the team.

Poor example of how Holland is "helping".

Yeah, you're unreasonably hung up on this point, honestly.

Holland wanted in-season flexibility cap wise. If a team has a bad start to the season and makes a good player available for trade but you don't have the cap room then you can't take advantage of a team potentially selling low on a player because they're desperate. I'm not saying that buying out Sekera was the right move, but it does provide options and Sekera wasn't getting traded without a sweetener.

I'd argue Bear and Persson are more than just a stopgap - Bear has been developing in our system for a few years now and Persson was one of the best defensemen in Sweden.

Definitely. I sold them a little short, very high on Bear and Persson has a lot of exciting attributes.
Just project Bouchard to be better than both, and I think the AHL is the right place to make that come true in the long run.

With Sekera on the team right now this team starts the year $2M over the cap. Pretty good chance the Neal/Lucic trade never happens.

I probably would've dumped Matt Benning ... that clears about $2 mill.

Nurse Larsson
Klefbom Bear
Russell Sekera

I had concerns about the buyout. But Holland did use the space well. And while that might get you right to the cap its tough to play a full season with no room for short term injuries. especially when your farm team is in Bak.

He would have found all the money he needed if he got rid of Russell. That was always the move.

I’m sure he tried to exhaust all trade options before buying him out. Even trading either sekera or Russell with retention would of likely been preferable. But both still had two years and both had some sort of ntc. It would of been hard to find a deal and likely would of meant some sort of retention along with an asset from an already thin pool.

I would put a significant amount of money they didn't even entertain the idea of trading Russell.

The current and previous management love Russell. Love what he does love what he brings. For the record, I like him on our team as well. But he was the clear cut obvious... painfully obvious player to move for cap freedom and to improve the team.

I also heard Russell LOVES being close to home to be with his new and old family. I believe Russell would be one of the last players traded because of the above. As much as I respect that loyalty and appreciate what Russell brings, it's flat out stupid in today's cap world.

Trading Russell this year with or without retention I think would have been easy. Next year probably half the teams on his list would jump at the opportunity. But I doubt you even hear a rumor of it.

I think your math is wrong?

And that is without Brodziak on LTIR which would free up ~$1M if needed.

The only issue is potential overages into next season with Mike Smith. But that seems pretty unlikely considering the makeup of the team.

I donno, maybe I'm missing something.

Yes let’s make our defence even worse by trading a 20 minute a night dman
The sooner the Oilers move on from Russell and Benning, the better they will become. At this point, I trust Lagesson and Bear on the bottom pairing D over those 2.

Bear seemed dangerous at both ends of the ice last night. 2 goals for, 2 goals against. Hopefully he can clean up his defensive zone play a bit.

And yet, Benning and Russell were only on the ice for one goal against last night. Benning also sprung Mcdavid for at least one chance

To be honest my post was just off the top of my head. But it also included Persson and Nygard as a replacement for Granlund in my calculations since they are both injured. That takes you to just under $2M over the cap. Brodziak does not come off the cap. If you get under you can LTIR him but he still counts which means this impacts both space at the deadline and also puts you at risk for Smith's bonus.
