Currently 1 goal back (7) of the trio of top goalscoring defensemen in the AHL (8) heading into tonight's game 1/17/20. He sits 12th in overall defense scoring with 23 points and 2nd among rookies behind 24 year old Brogan Rafferty who is tops with a whopping 37 points. He tops all rookie defensemen in goals and shots on goal. Current stat line:

36gp. 7-16-23 -14 20pim. 4PPG 91sog.

While his -14 looks rough, basically all of our top players down there are - players this season.

Jones -5 in 16gp.
Yamamoto -7 in 23gp.
Marody -7 in 28gp.
Cave -8 in 30gp.
Day -8 in 30gp.
Benson -8 in 36gp.
Malone -10 in 35gp.
Lowe -11 in 36gp.
Gambardella -15 in 30gp.

When your collective goalies have an 0.885 sv%. players +/-'s tend to take a beating.

Yup. Yamamoto is a plus player on the NHL club.

I posted this in the Bako thread but since this was bumped, may as well add it in here too.

6 game assist/point streak for Bouch. He's at 30 points in 45 games. In comparison, Bear had 18 points in 37 games in his rookie pro season and Jones had 17 points in 58 games. Bouchard is now 3rd in scoring for Bako only 5 points behind Benson and 4 points back of Currie.

Stats from before and after New Years:
Before 30gp. 4-12-16 -12 79sog.
After 15gp. 3-11-14 +4 33sog.

I could see him called up if we move out a defenseman, he is on a roll right now.

Pretty nice for Bouchard, but man that list has too many names that A) either never amounted to that much or B) fell way below expectations considering their offense in the AHL.

Murphy, Gragnani, Erixon in Europe.
Pouliot, Clendering in the AHL.
Ceci, McNabb, Weber sub-20-pts/season NHLers.

It's great to see his offense translate to the ahl. That grouping of players is a decent indication that he is among some of the better offensive defensemen.

Hopefully his all around game and skating have improved a bit.

With our depth on D I'm not sure he gets called up this year at all unless Holland makes a move and clears out someone. Which is unlikely.

I am not sure he'll be coming up anytime soon, unless Benning is on his way out. Bear isn't going anywhere, Larsson has been our best D these last games and Benning is a good 3RD. If we stay in the playoff spot I cannot see us moving any of our RDs to be honest so the only reason for a call up would be an injury.

Hopefully he can get a few playoffs games in for us this season. No way this kid doesn’t make the team next camp.

There's a lot of information not present in that post.

For example, Cody Ceci played 20-something games total on one of the most offensively stacked AHL teams in modern history (seriously go look at the 13-14 Binghampton Senators. It's crazy.) where someone like Ryan Murphy always had the high end skill of an elite NHL defenseman but has physical limitations on a level that prevented him from utilizing those skills.

Bouchard has come a long way over the course of the season. He started out as one of the guys and has emerged as the clear #1. He now plays 25 minutes a game. He should wind up with 50 points over ~65 games or so and that would put him up the list with Shea Theodore and Mike Green. He's got a decent frame and is an elite first pass.

I don't see the potential for him to miss as a top-4 defenseman. I think there's a good chance he is one today.

On the flipside, some names you see there are what people hope from Bouchard.

Green, Subban, Theodore, Faulk, Barrie, DeAngelo, Ellis all are decent-to-big point producers in their careers - and guys we wished were on the Oilers at certain points.

Bouchard will get the bonus of playing with McDavid/Draisaitl.

Sandin & Brannstrom are also super high tier prospects with tons of love in their organizations and Bouchard is right in that range.

When you see the busts on there it just tells you that producing at the AHL is a good step but it's about how you develop the player into their NHL role - some of those guys got bounced around a lot or never really got a good shot.

Defintely, it's just that on this specific list there were too many disappointments imo. There were reasons for as SK13 laid out, but still. The names kind of jumped right at you when looking at it.

Nice.

Not sure he'll get any games in since I can't see Benning moving up or out of the lineup, but it'll be nice to get him some NHL money and practices for a bit.

If you're calling up a 7th body for the press box, the last person they'd call up to sit is Evan Bouchard. It'd honestly be Joel Persson.

So either they intend to play him as a way to mitigate the loss of Klefbom, or they're about to trade Matt Benning.

Let him earn NHL money will on the team but I see no purpose in playing him. Maybe on the PP.

Those who hate Benning or Justin Schultz will hate his defensive game. Accept his warts (low motor) and learn to love his offensive game.

Keep it under 9 games
If he plays more then that it means that Klef came back and he pushed someone out, which in a playoff race is not a bad thing.

I’m happy if he does play well and eats a year on his ELC, gives us a potential top 4 option into next year. He’s not 18 anymore, he’s 20, if he can play let him play, the more depth we have the better.
