I'm going to re read the open source info and the articles, but I thought that there was around 180k claimed in addition to the principal amount.

I saw that today - which makes much more sense.

I don't think casino interest is Prime minus 1.5%.

Beyond that, I don't think this would have made it to the courts over a 15 k late payment fee. It seems Melnyk isn't really contesting that he owes the principal debt, defense #3 aside. If 15k was the issue the casino would likely waive it should it mean they didn't need to waste time and money going to court.

Then again, maybe Melnyk is trying to get out of the 900k too.

I was never suggesting it was just about the extra fees.

The signature defence is really strange. Reviewing the filings though it's just a notice of an intention to file a defence, similar to an appearance in some Canadian courts.

It looks like it may just be about delay.

Maybe Eugene should just come out and admit to everyone he's broke. That way, casino's won't pay him any attention and take advantage of him. A guy who tells everyone he's a billionaire walks into a casino and is surprised the casino encourages him to gamble. Rich!

I am reading that third defense again and I am just dying.

Has he EVER been to a casino before that night? That's literally their job and what they do. Dear god.

Honestly though if I paid someone in bank drafts and they did wait 6 months(idk this to be true) to cash them I would expect 0 interest as well due to incompetence.

Like ffs.

Yup... there is a big back story that we will most likely never know... what we can deduce though, is EM likes to gamble big ...and he loses

Update on the Casino lawsuit, I thought this was supposed to have a quick resolution?

Bagnall: Melnyk's gambling debt defence gets complicated
“Ottawa Citizen Article” said:
Last Friday, Melnyk’s lawyer made clearer his strategy by filing a “request to revise” his defence. He argued that the casino’s complaint — which rolled all five bank drafts in a single count of “nonpayment of dishonoured drafts” — should be split into five separate counts. Presumably this was done to avoid an all-or-nothing settlement, or to complicate the legal arguments in his favour.
“Each draft is a separate transaction,” Melnyk’s legal filing reads, “The drafts may have been made under different circumstances.”

That the plantiff simply said "alright" to the obvious stall tactic is pretty awesome. They must be pretty confident.

Also you have to cock an eyebrow to the Citizen wondering why this dispute has not been settled up to know. Settling the dispute means Melnyk paid up

Nothing is ever easy with this man.

He can't just pay his debt and settle this dispute privately, that would be too normal.

Interesting stuff... Citizen

"Melnyk, who clearly enjoys the casino experience, would not be well received in top gambling venues if he acquires a reputation for not honouring his debt."

"Just why relations soured is unclear. The two parties had a couple of years to try to resolve this thing amicably. There may be more to this dispute than currently meets the eye."

Wow
