Still young and lots of potential. I congratulate Bear with all the success he's achieved which he worked so hard for and nothing but more success and happiness going forward in his career and life.

It's been a honour cheering for him since the day he got drafted back in 2015 in the 5th round, 124th OV. What a fantastic draft it was for the Oil.

Rd1 Connor McDavid - C
Rd4 Caleb Jones - LD
Rd5 Ethan Bear - RD
Rd6 John Marino - RD
Rd7 Miroslav Svoboda - G
Rd7 Ziyat Paigin - LD

4 NHLers, 3 of them picked 4th round and later.

Damn reload of page made my comment disappear…

In short … Damn shame he has to go, but probably a victim of Holland trying to win now. I think he could use another couple of seasons as 4th-6th D and then really find his game as in juniors/AHL where he was rock solid in both ends of the ice. Loved this player since after his draft, when he played so great and over expectations in juniors and later AHL.

Really nice guy, I've met him a couple of times. Locker room loved him and he is a great role model for first nations people. Sad day for oilers fans but understandable that he was expendable. Still young and could go on to have a great career. All the best Ethan and thank you for your great representation and sorry that some fans racially attacked you after the playoffs, completely uncalled for.

There are Oilers' fans and there are Oilers' idiots. The latter are the type who eternally blamed Adam Larsson for Chiarelli's trading of Taylor Hall, and the type who brought up Bear's ancestry after he made a playoff mistake.

I remember when Bear got his first call-up a few years ago. I was really excited watching him on the PP (this was when McLellan was coach). Couldn't understand why he didn't get a fair shake the next season, but to Tippet and others' credit they inserted Bear into the line-up for 2019-20 and he did very well. But mostly it's to Ethan Bear's credit, as he worked super-hard, changed his diet and lifestyle, and made himself into a career NHL-er. I liked him a lot, and wish him all the best! (I do think this is another young defenceman trade we'll regret later on.)

He was just as good as Nurse 2yrs ago ... Last year the two went in different directions and made the gap huge.
Best of luck to him in CAR

Another player that should still be an Oiler.
While I wasn’t sold on him as a Top 4, I definitely saw him as a permanent fixture on the backend for an indefinite time.
Great young player and an even better young man. Best of luck Ethan!!

Best of luck to Ethan in Carolina. Should be a good place for him to live and grow. A long way from the fishbowl and the occasional racist idiot. Good player, great person.

I cheer for the logo on front but also many of the names on back of the jersey. Ethan Bear is a special story - a mid-round pick on a horrible organization that couldn't draft beyond high lottery picks who willed himself, worked and committed to make and succeed on an NHL roster. His life journey to get there was harder than many. He is a role model and ambassador for a whole population that's received the shit end of the stick for generations in our country and a bridge to help others to appreciate his athletic ability but also open our eyes when lowest of the low fanatics hurled racist garbage at him when a young, developing defensemen made some crucial learning mistakes in tight playoff games. He showed us all grace, elegance and poise in how he handled himself.

Ethan Bear is a special player, an important story well beyond what he's achieved in a short time as an NHL player whose beaten the odds on many levels. This is a big loss for the Oil Country community. A guy I will cheer to have great success with solid potential as a player but who as a person is the type you want as a teammate, fan and community. Best of luck Ethan and continue to break down walls that seek to limit your achievements both as a player and a role model.

EDIT: Will add a few story links for anyone interested.

Sad that Bear probably will do amazing on the Canes. The Oilers coaching staff seem to be poopoo at developing/fostering strong play, the Oilers staff are more like “hey Connor, you are really good at playing hockey, what do you think?” But they are the f***ing experts. They know more than Connor, or at least they should. Sad

Good luck in Carolina! Will be a solid #4 one day but we had a log jam of offensive rhd and being smaller and not the fastest he was the odd man out after signing barrie+ ceci, nice getting a power forward in return.

also we traded Bear yesterday and I ended up face to face with a Bear on my run through some trails last night, coincidence or a curse?

I like Bear,Larsson,Bouchard better than Barrie,Ceci, Bouchard. IMO Larsson leaving cost Bear his job. Finding talented reasonably priced players to play in the great white North is tough. Bear should have been a long term piece here.

Many question the Kieth $ and Hyman term. I think the biggest risk is Ceci 4x$3.5. I don’t see him capable of being a shutdown guy

I liked Ethan Bear previously and wanted him to see some more PP and get some more minutes with Draisaitl but that Ethan Bear dropped off. He really struggled for the last season and a half and was flat out bad in both playoff series. One of our worst players. Owned by Toews, owned by the Jets.

The reality is Bouchard and Barrie have forced him out of this lineup. Those guys are far and away better options. Nurse obviously, Keith too. We're loaded with offensive D, and I suspect Bear was told to try to be more of an all round D and couldn't manage it. NHL is a tough league and in the Canadian division size was owning him. He's simply too small to be asked to have any shutdown role. Maybe on a team that needs his offensive side more he can revert to more of a specialist.

Good luck in future path.

I'm so sad to see Bear go. I really didn't want this to happen. He is going to be a great top 4 dman. He is one of my fav young players and I'm glad to see someone develop outside of the first round. I hope you enjoy playing in Carolina, please know you still have a ton of supporters in Canada. Hopefully that racist idiot has learned his lesson.
