Karlsson was bad defensively last year and was good but not Norris level offensively and people were wondering if he’s injured. Well he’s had a whole offseason to recover, and he’s been playing ever since being “injured”....

Is it possible he’s just not as good as he once was?

1st goal: Kubalik is his man, first he covers him quite well, but then all of the sudden he starts skating towards the puck carrier,
the pass is made cross the ice, Karlsson just stands there about a meter off the goal, does nothing, the puck comes to him,
he just marginally swings his stick couple of times and then he stands completely still after that

How can any player play like that?

The question is, is he still injured? Doubt he's 100%.

This excuse is getting tiresome. Every player in the league plays hurt. Plain and simple EK is just flat out a fraction of his former self and it's only going to get worse. People get older and slower, not younger and faster. Give it 3 years and his contract will look like one of the worst in the game.

Big EK fan, but he’s one guy where mainstream analytics twitter seems to be intentionally obtuse about. It’s not hugely impressive that you tilt the ice offensively so much when every counter attack is an adventure because you can’t/won’t play decent D in your own zone.

I’m not saying he’s bad all the time or that his positives don’t outweigh the negatives by a lot, but for example guys like Filipovic and Berkshire still have him as by far the best D when it’s pretty clear that a lot of goals against have been directly his fault the last year. He just seems like a glass cannon.

Has he ever been really good defensively? ;)

That aside, he's really just standing and doing nothing on the ice. In every play he is in like 30% and then gives up. No winning team can have that attitude on the ice. Really really bad.

It's like looking defending at a vet all star game. Stand and wait for the highlight reel goal.
