Out of all the players you mentioned, I think Cholo has the least probability of success. He doesn't read plays fast enough for the NHL.

I'd rather they sign a LHD, let Lindstrom, Bowey, and Cholo fight for the last spot. Plus Nemeth will more than likely be traded at TDL. If he plays as well as last season, I see a 2nd coming back.

Yeah, while I know he is I haven't really seen why Cholo is in contention for a spot out of camp. Outside of that initial stretch he has been flat out bad, and I don't think he has looked great in GR. Put the kid in GR, give him 20+ minutes a night, and see if he can get his game going for at least half a season before calling him up.

To start the year, I wouldn't be against running something like:

Dekeyser-Hronek
Nemeth-Gudas
Andy Greene-Lindstrom/Bowey
Lindstrom/Bowey

Have to think a lot of this depends on what happens with the AHL, too.

Krug isn't coming here unless Yzerman overpays.
Yzerman won't overpay for a 29-year-old 5'9 defenseman. There's no need for it. Krug gets at least 6 years on the open market.
He asked for $49M from Boston.

Sooner or later SY will have to shell out for an established D-Man. Krug will have a couple good years in him at least. 5 years 8.5 AAV is easily workable. DRW could easily be sniffing playoffs next season with 3 FAs. Goalie, D-man and Forward. Possibly 2 D-man, but I don't think Yzerman will do that. Holtby I think will be overpriced for a top flight goalie starting the end of his career. But Markstrom will be affordable and is going to be solid for 3 years. The aforementioned Krug and add in Dadonov. All the sudden you have 2 proper scoring lines and have a legit top pairing D duo with a goalie who's been above .910 for that past 5 seasons.

I am not forgetting about the RFA raises coming this year and the couple coming the year after. The year after that DDK and Nielsen fall off the books so there are no cap issues in our future if we sign some high priced FAs.

No way do I pay Torey Krug $8,5M.

Any plan that has a goal of the Wings sniffing the playoffs next year is a plan that likely involves taking on long, boat-anchor contracts that hamper the team when we finally are ready to compete.

in 5 years Krug will be 34. We don't need an 8 million dollar 34 year old plugging up the cap around the time this core is starting to hit its top contracts. Pretty sure we stamped out the Krug madness, please stop it. 30 y.o. UFA is not the way to build. Especially not a 8.5 million dollar power play specialist.

The reason I would expose Dekyser is that it is unlikely anyone is going to take a middle of the road overpaid 30 year old D with bak problems and 1 year left on his contract. And if they do, its not a loss. Maybe it leaves us a little worse off on D but that would just put us from bad to bad. So what is the net loss? I would protect all our young defenseman just in case they develop better than expectation and expose dekyser.

5 years. That's not a boat anchor contract not by a long shot. 8 years 92 mil is an albatross. I would not sign anyone longer than 5 years. 4 would be even better. And if nobody will sign Krug for 8.5 AAV then great! Let's get him for 7.5 AAV - he's worth it. 3 year deal for Markstrom and 2 for Dadonov. If they won't sign for that short of term with a higher AAV then fine, let it go. But it could be done and it would make us a playoff potential and that is good news. And it would not clog spots from rookies that are "the future" or stop the development of any valuable player.

Krug can shop himself for 6-8 years no problem and he will probably mold his salary to fit a cup condentendor like the team he is already with which is the one he will ultimately sign with just like a mini version of the stamkos pipe dream everyone kept wasting their time with. If he signs for 5 years its going to be for 8.5 or more and we shouldn't tie up money like that with an aging power play specialist. No way he signs a 4 year deal or less that would be a terrible career move. I think we should probably take Krug talk to another thread though way off topic.

Zero chance we protect dekeyser makes no sense to protect a guy with one year left on his deal over a young dman in lindstrom

If anything , if we feel like he might be claimed we take a risk and move him to a contending team who can use him for next years playoffs and maybe stick around if that team risks losing a young asset in the back end . Rather protect lindstrom , rather than losing him and trading a dman who’ll have only one season left . Ya sorry its cool your from detroit but doesnt mean you should play your whole career there automatically

As for timashov im still not sold on him and this year will show if we should protect svechnikov over timashov or someone else all together
