Nugent-HopkinsRYAN.jpg
reddeer50x50.gif

Name: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Height: 6'0''
Weight: 164 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: April 12, 1993 (Age 18)
Birthplace: Burnaby, BC, CAN.

2010-2011 (Red Deer Rebels) - 69 GP, 31 G, 75 A, 106 PTS, 51 PIM.

B.J. MacDonald - (Nugent-Hopkins) has very good puck-handling capabilities. His on-ice awareness is very good. He's one of those guys that knows where everyone is and where they should be and where the puck should go . . . He can dish both right or left, either on his backhand or forehand with that kind of vision. But not just the vision, but the fact he can lay that puck between the skate boot and the skate blade -- that's hard to find.

JensenNICKLAS.jpg
Oshawa_Generals_0811.gif

Name: Nicklas Jensen
Height: 6'2''
Weight: 187 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: March 6, 1993 (Age 18)
Birthplace: Herning, DNK.

2010-2011 (Oshawa Generals) - 61 GP, 29 G, 29 A, 58 PTS, 42 PIM.

The Scouting Report - A big riser from our previous OHL rankings, Jensen has exploded since coming back from the World Junior D-1 Championships. He’s a dynamic player with great skating ability and with his size, he can fight through checks and use his skating ability to go end to end or break plays through the neutral zone. Consistency was an issue for him, but he looks to be bringing it more every game now.

CatenacciDANIEL.jpg
saultstemarie50x50.gif

Name: Daniel Catenacci
Height: 5'10''
Weight: 183 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: March 9, 1993 (Age 18)
Birthplace: Newmarket, ON, CAN.

2010-2011 (Soo Greyhounds) - 67 GP, 26 G, 45 A, 71 PTS, 117 PIM.

The Scouting Report - Has rebounded well this season after a mediocre rookie season as the 1st Overall Pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection. Catenacci is one of the better two-way forwards in the OHL, and has also established himself as one of the most consistent offensive threats in the league. He’s a good skater with a low center of gravity and very good strength for being undersized in stature. Has a heavy stick and wins a lot of battles with his drive and is a fairly creative player.

Oscar%20Klefbom.jpg

Name: Oscar Klefbom
Height: 6'4''
Weight: 200 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: July 20, 1993 (Age 17)
Birthplace: Karlstad, SWE.

2010-2011 (Farjestad) - 23 GP, 1 G, 1 A, 2 PTS, 2 PIM.

The Scouting Report - Big defenseman with good range and mobility. Sees the ice very well and has the ability to make creative up ice passes to generate offense. Has had strong showings in his age class at international events, and will be more of a factor in the SEL as his game continues to mature.

Mersch_Michael_1011_h.jpg
50556_259120895683_8181928_q.jpg

Name: Michael Mersch
Height: 6'2''
Weight: 198 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: October 2, 1992 (Age 18)
Birthplace: Park Ridge, IL, USA.

2010-2011 (U. of Wisconsin) - 39 GP, 8 G, 10 A, 18 PTS, 30 PIM.

Chris Peters - Has great size, he’s continued to work on rounding out his physical game, but his quick release turns heads the most. Mersch has sniper-like accuracy when he’s got time. Improved play in traffic could lead to more points.

Name: Tyler Wotherspoon
Height: 6'1''
Weight: 203 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: March 12, 1993 (Age 18)
Birthplace: Burnaby, BC, CAN.

2010-2011 (Portland Winterhawks) - 64 GP, 2 G, 10 A, 12 PTS, 73 PIM.

Bleacher Report - In Tyler Wotherspoon, what you're seeing is what you're getting. He's a steady, calm defensive defenseman. He has some puck poise, but he's not a rusher or a great outlet passer. He's a shutdown defenseman with a solid physical game. He's not going to put up a serious amount of points but he's likely a No. 4 or 5 defenseman at the pro level. He'll never be a defensive liability and will likely be a fixture on a team's Penalty Kill.

Name: Travis Ewanyk
Height: 6'0''
Weight: 178 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: March 29, 1993 (Age 18)
Birthplace: North Vancouver, BC, CAN.

2010-2011 (Edmonton Oil Kings) - 72 GP, 16 G, 11 A, 27 PTS, 126 PIM.

Kirk Luedeke - Raw, but big-hitting power forward is rising on draft lists despite his modest production on the Edmonton Oil Kings. Potential high payoff in time because he skates well and has a nice shot. A nice open-ice hitter who relishes contact and will be even nastier when he adds mass to his 6-1, 184-pound frame. Posted 16 goals and 27 points, but added 126 penalty minutes as a hard-nosed, intimidating presence you win tough games with. His production is poised to make a big jump next season and potentially beyond.

Name: Zac Larraza
Height: 6'2''
Weight: 192 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: February 25, 1993 (Age 18)
Birthplace: Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

2010-2011 (USNDTP) - 49 GP, 8 G, 5 A, 13 PTS, 20 PIM.

Kirk Luedeke - One of the bigger (6-2 frame) and most purely talented of the USA forwards, Larraza has yet to put it all together. He skates extremely well for such a tall kid, with a long, fluid stride and the ability to get off the mark quickly from a stop. Denver University recruit has the hands and finishing skills, but may not see the ice all that well and has trouble in terms of trying to do too much on his own. Definitely another raw, project pick who will need time and patience.

Born: September 25, 1991 (Age 19)
Birthplace: Solana Beach, CA, USA.

2010-2011 (Prince Albert Raiders) - 71 GP, 45 G, 41 A, 86 PTS, 45 PIM.

Name: Keegan Lowe
Height: 6'1''
Weight: 173 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: March 29, 1993 (Age 18)
Birthplace: Greenwich, CT, USA.

2010-2011 (Edmonton Oil Kings) - 71 GP, 2 G, 22 A, 24 PTS, 123 PIM.

The Scouting Report - The son of Edmonton Oilers GM Kevin Lowe has had a surprisingly good season for the Oil Kings. He is very scrawny and physically weak but can effectively uses his reach when he’s on his game. He has been trusted by the coaching staff to play key minutes including special teams. While he also has to improve his defensive zone coverage, his progress is encouraging. If he and promising 2009 3rd Overall WHL pick Griffin Reinhart (son of former NHLer Paul Reinhart) continue to improve, Pysyk won’t have to shoulder all the burden again next year.

Name: Mike Pereira
Height: 5'11''
Weight: 170 lb
Shoots: Left
Born: November 24, 1991 (Age 19)
Birthplace: West Haven, CT, USA.

2010-2011 (U.Mass.) - 32 GP, 12 G, 13 A, 25 PTS, 22 PIM.

New England Hockey Journal - His skating ability (is his best attribute). First of all, he has that speed that allows him to see a hole and get through it. He’s very dangerous with the puck down low; he’s a good stick-handler who’s very patient and sees the ice so well. He’s also got a very accurate wrist shot that he uses effectively.

FerlinBRIAN.jpg
indiana_ice.gif

Name: Brian Ferlin
Height: 6'2''
Weight: 201 lb
Shoots: Right
Born: June 3, 1992 (Age 18)
Birthplace: Jacksonville, FL, USA.

2010-2011 (Indiana Ice) - 55 GP, 25 G, 48 A, 73 PTS, 26 PIM.

The Scouting Report - Ferlin on the other hand, does have offensive abilities and potential to develop them even further. He’s a slick stick handler and has the confidence to attack the net with the puck. He also has the knack to be in places where the puck comes to him. Ferlin just needs to improve his skating and continue to refine his skills. He’s certainly worth a mid to late round pick on a team willing to wait for him to develop in college.

TheScoutingReport said:
Jenner has great size and strength for a 17 year old and is very hard to move off the puck. He’s not afraid to get physical and he can handle body contact effectively as well. He has a good release and likes to shoot the puck and wants the puck to be on his stick... There’s a lot that translates well to the NHL level, but he needs to find some consistency.

the smooth-skating, mobile defenseman’s overall game is truly something to behold. The former Choate-Rosemary standout has put up 4 assists, 27 penalty minutes, and is a plus-2 in 18 games thus far with the U.S. National Team Development Program, while playing against older competition in the USHL... The 17-year-old is a very well-rounded defender, that is excellent at shutting down opponents with his reach, skating ability, and strength. He has exceptional hockey sense, and is great while on the rush or when it comes to making a hard, crisp pass out of the zone.

Another unsung player who turned heads is defenceman Brennan Serville, an eighth-round pick in 2009 (In the OHL to the Sudbury Wolves). He proved to be mobile and solid on his skates, hard to knock down or separate from the puck

Jimmy Vesey

Belmont Hill had left winger Jimmy Vesey, son of former Boston Bruin and Merrimack College scoring legend Jim Vesey of Charlestown. Central Scouting has Vesey 84th on their mid-term list, and I could see why. He's got good size and is a better skater than he's been given credit for (his father told us that his own heavy feet from his playing days has often erroneously been linked to his son). The younger Vesey's first few steps are just average, but he's got fine top-end speed and is a pretty shifty player when he gets some open ice to work with. He should be able to pick up an extra step if he works at it, and by all accounts, he pushes himself pretty hard.

Best defenseman in the draft. Very calm and surreal on the ice. Positioning is very good. Makes a very good 1st pass. Rarely cracks under pressure. Can help make his defense teammates and partner around him better. Has the size to be a dominant defenseman for years to come. Can lead his team for long stretches. A potential #1 defenseman. Comparisons have been made to Nick Lidstrom and Ulf Samuelsson.

Matt is a fantastic player, with both skill and speed, Matt moves the puck well and is able to protect the puck in his own end. Everytime his time has the puck you can see Matt getting in front of the net waiting for passes, but he is also not afraid to play in the corners and behind the net. Matt has puck control abilities for beyond the tender age of 17, he is smart enough to fall back to defence if needed or any other position, he can cover his man very well and can create turnovers.

He's got that look about him in the net, When you see him, you say to yourself this kid really does look like a goalie. He has great balance and spreads out very well. He's got the make-up to be a pro goalie, the strength and knowledge that you need. He's got quick feet, but what really sticks out in my mind is his positioning, the way he covers the net. I really like the way he battles in there, too.

The Scouting Report said:
At this point, the top ranked Russian player playing in Russia, Shalunov is a big winger with good speed and a heavy shot. A little predictable in that he generally sticks to the wing and tries to cut in, but his game should evolve as he plays more consistently against a higher level of competition moving forward.

A very smooth skating, big defenseman who is solid in every situation you place him in. He is capable of running the powerplay, leading the rush up the ice, in addition be a defensive stalwart on the backend. His long reach is certainly an advantage to his defensive game that is already proficient as it is. His vision is impeccable, and has tape-to-tape stretch passes that were used constantly leading Delbarton to a scoring chance. He is cool, calm, and collective with the puck and certainly showed his stickhandling skills blowing by 3 defenders with ease, as well as a few other occasions where Killian seemed to have the puck on a string.

Scott Campbell said:
He had a very impressive showing in the playoffs last season, where he notched 4 goals and 7 points in only 10 games, and has translated that into a larger role on a Knights roster that will largely consist of a scoring by committee mantra this year. Griffith has shown the ability to put himself into good positions and be effective offensively.

4-Viktor-Berglind.jpg
- Viktor Berglind

Matt Bugg said:
There really is a thing as having too much talent. Ask Victor Berglind. The 5’11, 181 lbs rearguard spent eleven games with the Brynäs senior team last season, collecting one assist. Berglind likely would have started the 2010-11 season there, too, if it weren’t for an organizational overload of skill- as many as five skaters under the age of 21 could have made the club’s opening-night roster but not for the limited number of jobs available.

Although the owner of perhaps the hardest shot in Sweden’s J20 ranks and almost unstoppable when he is able to skate into open ice to deploy a surgically precise outlet pass, Berglind is very much a work in progress. He is often out-matched physically, even against his peers, and can be guilty of having tunnel vision when it comes to advancing the puck. In addition, while his top-end speed is above-average, increased explosiveness would allow for him to get back to his end promptly if and when possession is lost.
