a silly name the german federation gave a normal camp where all potential U18, U19 and U20 national team players come together.

Cool. It would be nice to see Germany break through and make the semis at the World Championships. I hear hockey is only getting better in Germany.

not really. i think it's the opposite.

DEL attendance is growing every season, more kids start playing hockey and Draisatl just became the highest drafted German-born and trained player in the NHL history and yet you say that? :help:

19 July could be an interesting date for German hockey. There is a chance that the German Hockey Federation elects a new president. That might help somewhat.

But while I don't agree completely with Zecke that it's getting worse, I don't see that much improvement.
I am pretty sure that the popularity of hockey won't increase much beyond what it is right now. Maybe the attendance figures go up a little more, but that won't change the fact that hockey will remain a niche sport.

The player development ist still suspect beacuse there is not enough money to pay for decent coaches. Missing out on the Olympics didn't help either.

Nevertheless come 2017 there will be a packed arena in Cologne with a combination of hockey fans and event fans, who know little about hockey, but love to party at sports events of any kind. And again people will believe that hockey is much more popular in Germany than it really is.

Cool, Paris and Cologne host the Worlds in 2017. Hopefully some German city gets it every 5 years or so. I bet the attendance in Cologne is better than Paris and Germany beats France if they meet!

DEL attendance is misleading. it's higher because of a few arenas, but most hockey cities/towns struggle and are in a decline. it's a process since the golden 90s where even 3rd tier hockey had impressive attendance.

are really more kids starting to play hockey in germany? i have to think they are way less. all i see in youth hockey is teams folding due to the lack of players. i don't know any youth hockey club where they don't have problems dressing enough kids to start teams.

draisaitl is generational talent for germany. but did you see any other germans in draft? or last year? there's no depth anymore.
half the german U20 tried their luck in NA last season. most were not able to impress in USHL or NAHL. not a good sign IMO.

german hockey is on a decline since the late 90s for several reason. but IMO the biggest reason is the idiocy of most officials. every summer someone is fighting over media with others. DEL vs 2nd-tier, 2nd-tier vs 3rd-tier, federation vs DEL, federation vs 2nd-tier, federation vs everyone. i don't even remember all the fights in media the last decade. it's shameful.
until german hockey will have unity on all levels and concept for all tiers and youth hockey, it will struggle.

oh and the amount of rinks in germany is also not rising. many rinks have trouble surviving and/or don't want hockey teams anymore since all hockey teams since the 90s face bankruptcy countless times and stupid management.

if you want to believe german hockey is on the rise, go ahead. but don't be sad if reality will hit you hard on this. ;)

Germany is a whole lot better than is was in the late 90s, so I don't really so your point. The average DEL-player is a much better skater with more skill than back in the 90s. Not to mention that we have far more NHL-player or players who could make the NHL than we had back then.

The drop off happened much earlier and it was mostly the remnants of older generations that kept German hockey somewhat relevant through the 90s. Since then things have improved again, sometimes by quite a bit, sometimes by just minor improvements.

The problem isn't that Germany has gotten worse, it hasn't, the problem is that other nations have grown to a level where they are similar to Germany. Now a huge jump would be necessary to really seperate itself from similar nations, but such a jump isn't really possible. As such, Germany will bounce around just like all the other nations on said level, sometimes having surprising success, sometimes being at the lower end of expectations.

Completely agree. Also, Germany had 13 NHL draftees in the 80s, 19 in 90s and 30 in 00s.
