Eh, bland's not the right word. I think generic is better, or derivitave. Show a street level shot of it, or an aerial shot and you'd be hard pressed to name the venue or city it's in.

It's unfortunate, usually the concept drawings show the most flare and it gets more and more generic as the design gets refined. Look at the abomination that will be the new museum in Alberta, THAT is generic, it's unfortunate that dollars come into the picture to such an extent that all flare and risk in design disappears. That being said, you can go too far in the other direction too....

ICON Venue Group, the Colorado-based company the city has hired to manage the project, presented conceptual sketches for the interior of the new arena to city council that featured wide-open concourses, more space and more seats— 18,400 compared to 16,839 in Rexall.

The $450 million project is $100 million short of becoming a reality at this point, but that hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming.

ICON, has built nine NHL arenas in the last decade including in Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Phoenix and Denver, in addition to other projects.

Kansas City-based 360 Architecture is the preferred choice for architect for the new Edmonton arena, although no contract has been signed. A construction contractor also needs to be secured.

Construction documents are expected to be put out for tender late next year and the new arena would open Fall 2015.

McKesson snaps up slice of Canada’s Katz Group

U.S. health care giant McKesson Corp. MCK-N is buying a big part of Edmonton-based drug store operator Katz Group Canada Inc. for $920-million.

The California-based company announced late Monday it will acquire the independent outlets and franchise businesses of Katz, a privately held company.

Those mainly operate as I.D.A. and Guardian brands across Canada.

Daryl Katz, chairman of the Katz Group, said the sale involves non-core businesses and will not affect the company’s corporate drug chains such as Rexall and Pharma Plus.

“This transaction unlocks significant value through the sale of two outstanding but non-core assets,†the Katz Group chairman said in a separate release from Toronto.
