Today the Marlies assigned 11 players to the Growlers. That seems high for an ECHL team, or is that normal?

What is the number of players assigned by some of the other parent clubs?

Sunday's ECHL Transactions list - ECHL Transactions - Sept. 30 - The ECHL - Premier 'AA' Hockey League - had a huge number of assignments to training camp rosters for many of the teams. This was due to ECHL camps opening on October 1st, with organizations waiting until the last day to populate their AA affiliate rosters. Without checking each transaction, it does appear that the Growlers received an unusually large number of assignments from the Leafs; but some of that may be due to other teams omitting details from their lists.

It's high...but based on other threads here about how Toronto plans to use their ECHL franchise that's not a surprise.

Last year, the Marlies sent 12 to the Solar Bears. Expect more this year to the Growlers. Comparatively, the rest of the Clubs sent ~3 on average to their ECHL franchises last year. So, the Marlies are certainly bucking the curve.

Just be aware that your team's opening night lineup will look very little like the training camp roster. But you should get the treat of seeing some very good hockey players in exhibition play. Enjoy them while you can.

Why will there be so much change in a week? Seems the ECHL is VERY different than the AHL for many reasons then the obvious skill level.

For starters, teams invite a lot more players to training camp on PTOs than they actually need, so you'll be seeing players cut before opening night. Teams can have 22 21 skaters (this is lowered to 21 20 after the first month or so) and two goalies, with two extra spots for reserved players.

Speaking from what Worcester went through last season, you could end up with a few more guys from the AHL or NHL club by the time the season starts or soon after, resulting in players signed by your ECHL club being cut from the team.

Throughout the season you'll also lose guys who signed with your ECHL club who get offers overseas or by AHL teams that your club isn't affiliated with.

Seeing how a majority of Newfoundland's players are from the AHL and NHL clubs, you'll be losing players to recalls more than anything else.

From the ECHL FAQ:
What is the ECHL roster limit?
ECHL teams can carry a maximum of 20 players (21 for the first 30 days of the regular season) on their active roster (not counting players on reserve or injured reserve).

One other difference between the AHL and ECHL is that the ECHL has a 18-man dress limit, so instead of a fourth line, you have an extra forward who can fill in for guys who need rest or have to go to the locker room for injury treatment/equipment repair/bathroom break/etc.

Not sure how often, if ever, teams use the 16th skater spot for a 7th defenseman instead of a 10th forward.

The Railers have...if that's the only healthy skater you have left you dress him.
Exactly. I think it happens whenever a team has 9 or less healthy forwards and 7 or more healthy defensemen. I don't think anyone does it by choice, but it happens a few times a season. I think it is actually more frequent that a team dresses 11 and 5. Usually that means an extra forward taking a d spot on the power play and the defensemen taking turns double shifting, unless there is a forward who can also play D.

Any interesting players in the Growlers line up (prospect wise)? Looking forward to the first game tonight.

Factoring in some current injuries they will probably dress 10 players on AHL contracts - all of whom are projects who are younger, most of whom are playing their first professional games, or who played a few at the end of last year after they graduated from college.

Looks like there is only 1 guy on a Leafs contract: McAdam. The rest of the guys assigned from the Marlies are pretty much just ECHL guys on AHL contracts.

Saw that on Wikipedia. I know he was the return in the Matt Martin trade. Maybe the Leafs see some promise there, Islanders must have to give him that ELC.

Right on, looking forward to it!
