Does anyone have an overall total for East vs West this year? I know someone ran one last year, but I haven't seen much on it this year. I'm assuming it's due to the gap being much smaller.

The West is 154-114-30 (338 points) vs. the East.
The East is 144-122-32 (320 points) vs. the West.

This can easily be found on NHL.com if you choose the "vs. East" and "vs. West" standings. You just need to add it up yourself.

Note that the Central Division is where the real power is this year. West leads East by a slight amount

I completely agree and could easily see any of St. Louis, Chicago or Nashville winning the cup this year.

These teams just have clear identities, play great systems, possess good depth at all positions and some bright offensive talents, have good leadership groups and confidence. They're all just really well-rounded and built for the playoffs and I really like their chances.

I'd be very happy and proud for the growth of the league if a newer franchise like Nashville or a perpetually unlucky one like St. Louis were to win the Stanley Cup (unless it was against my Habs, I'd be livid then).

I added up the East vs. West records for as long as the NHL has had it properly divided (for example, no Pacific coast teams in the East). In all pairs I've put the West/Campbell on the top line and the East/Wales on the bottom line

From here on I've lumped loser point games in with regular losses since there are no more shootouts

At this point I couldn't get the records to balance out (one conference would have 130 wins while the other would only have 125 losses) so I went to average points per team.

Might be a few errors since I did it without double checking.

West wins 17 years, the East 13. 15 of the West's 17 wins have come since 97-98. If you are looking for what causes the switch, 1997-98 was the last year the Leafs were in the West. Toronto has been in the inferior conference for 25 of 30 seasons that NHL has divided the league by geography.
