On the Forecheck:

The Predators traded the 79th pick to Dallas for two picks in the 2024 draft, which meant their next was the 83rd. With it, they added defender Dylan MacKinnon from the QMJHL's Halifax Mooseheads.

MacKinnon is a lower-scoring, high-physicality defender. He had 23 points in 61 games last season with the Mooseheads, while racking up 75 PIM (including three fighting majors, in a league trying to cut down on fights). In the playoffs, he managed two assists and 14 PIM in 20 games.

I like the sounds of this pick, and if a guy says he tries to model his game after Shea Weber, what more do you need?

Maybe the numbers look low, but again, he's a guy on a powerhouse junior team (with L'Heureux!) who have older guys to supply the offense from the back end. Instead he seems to be billed as that tough defender who throws hits and is knocking bodies around to clear out space for his goalie, which is a good type of player to have in our prospect mix. And it's not like he's a sluggish skater either, sounds like he is mobile enough. Maybe he's a guy like we wished Lauzon could more consistently be.
